Dc thinking of putting it as an achievable insurance when they apply next year. But I have literally never heard of it and know nothing about it! Other choices are Exeter, Loughborough, Birmingham, Swansea I think.

Lincoln is a great city a bit small and quiet and not the most respected university, but our child has loved it.

clary · 04/05/2023 14:53

Friends DD is there and enjoying it. It was on ds’s list and the accommodation is nice.

Campus is small and offers are low indicating its status I guess (dd had unconditional from there, she didn’t go there tho as she was put off by the Eng lit talk).

Nice city but small and a bit isolated - at least in Lboro you can easily go to Nottingham to see a band.

What subject Op?

clary · 04/05/2023 14:53

Sorry it was on dd’s list I meant.

It feels like a safe choice if you look round it. Lincoln is nice. It's not a big campus so you can walk anywhere you need to be and it's right near the centre.

Skybluepinky · 04/05/2023 15:01

If u want an unconditional offer Lincoln is the uni, most of their offers for non health care course are unconditional.
it is one of the ones they either love or move 2nd year to another uni.
My cousin met her hubby there and loved iIt.

OrlandointheWilderness · 04/05/2023 16:37

Yep lots of experience with it. Fab library, lovely city. What course are they applying for?

RampantIvy · 04/05/2023 17:30

I'm struggling to believe that you have never heard of it.

Everyone I know who has studied there liked it. It is a lovely city and quite compact.
They do give a lot of unconditional offers - more than most universities.

My DD just finishing their first year. They are clever - unconditional offers for lots of courses and free hoodies. My DD then refused her other conditional offers (Loughborough / Cardiff / York) and was not as motivated to work hard for her alevels!

But she does love it. It is very small and she gets town fever. All students can be in halls all the time so good for students who don't want to share a house or don't find there forever friends straight away.

Pastoral and learning support offer is good. Very difficult to get a student job as lots of students / small city.

Im assuming maybe the OP didn't know that Lincoln had a university not that she had never heard of Lincoln, that would be surprising

I know two children of friends who went/go there, one has graduated and has a good job, the other is enjoying studying there currently

TizerorFizz · 04/05/2023 21:05

What subject? Surely Lincoln are asking for grades way below Exeter? Isn’t Swansea the insurance on that list @Carmelalefou

NotBabiesForLong · 05/05/2023 07:55

DD is just finishing 3rd year at Lincoln. She turned down RG unis in favour of Lincoln as 1st choice. I was a bit sceptical but it has been a great choice for her.

Her course requires ABB, however they do give unconditionals if your gcse's and predictions are high enough. Not everyone on her course or house had unconditional.

The city is lovely. Kind of a Campus City. Accommodation is priced low (£100 per week incl bills. 48 week contract) and is lovely. No need for any travel costs whilst at uni. And the central train gives you easy access to nottingham, sheffield, london and further a afield. And a great city for us parents to visit. There are plenty of part time hospitality jobs.

Anecdotally, friends' children who studied at Lincoln are now all in great jobs. But I'm guessing the same can be said for some students everywhere. Overall, Lincoln has been a fantastic choice.

mdh2020 · 05/05/2023 08:35

University of Lincoln has many highly rated academics on their staff and is a caring institution.

Fifthtimelucky · 05/05/2023 20:50

The daughter of a friend had it as her insurance, but she got the grades she needed for her first choice, Loughborough.

Unfortunately she was unhappy at Loughborough. She didn't enjoy the course and she wasn't able to play her chosen sport, which had been one of Loughborough's attractions, because even though she was good, she wasn't good enough.

She started again the following year at Lincoln, has been extremely happy, and is now doing her Masters there.

Name change for this one. Graduated at the University of Lincoln in 2001 in economics. A real student town, great student nights
but keeps its act together. Student jobs are few and far between, but it used to be relatively affordable at the time. Plenty of continental European peers in my year group, Erasmus I think but that might have changed after Brexit. Very able student body and a very progressive and liberal curriculum for the time. Feels rather tiny, always the same clubs, etc. Post-grad in Holland then went to trade derivatives in the City and made it to Director level (hiring from Oxbridge:) currently at a supranational organisation so cannot complain. I know how it sounds, but this is a true story.

TizerorFizz · 12/05/2023 08:54

Many universities have their success stories. Some have way more than others. Multiply this story 1000 times over at the elite universities.

Lincoln now markets itself by easier entry with unconditionals and often more firsts handed out than nearly anywhere else. Therefore it’s not respected in the same way Nottingham or Loughborough is.

RampantIvy · 12/05/2023 08:57

On the WIWIKAU Facebook page I see Lincoln crop up more often than any other university for unconditional offers. They often send out free gifts to prospective students. I don't doubt that it is a lovely university, but I still get the impression that they are trying too hard to get bums on seats.

LincolnAI · 12/05/2023 16:51

I think they used to have a large EU Erasmus contingent which was very selective and now that it’s gone they need to make up for the numbers. Less known outside Europe than many others, so they need to work harder for UK students I guess.

TizerorFizz · 13/05/2023 16:57

@LincolnAI Lincoln has less than 6% international students. That’s obviously very low. They therefore miss out on a lot of international fees. York 15% and Nottingham 14% for comparison. Sheffield 25% which is higher than Oxford, 20%. This was 20/21. Figures might be a bit different but I doubt it for Lincoln.

It’s a great shame they offer so many unconditionals. DC should not be choosing Lincoln over York, for example. It’s a form of bribery and I’m probably in the camp that says they should be banned. The lower tariff is what should attract students.

NotBabiesForLong · 15/05/2023 00:07

Given the current method of selecting unis before you know your grades, and the stress this uncertainty causes whilst working towards your exams, there is a definite positive for some unis offering Unconditional offers.

If this is what the student needs to relieve the pressure during a difficult time, then an unconditional can be the best option for some. Whilst others thrive and do their best working under pressure. This cannot be true for everyone.

As with everything it is horses for courses, not one size fits all.
