Best place to study film production in UK?

As title says, but also open to hear non UK places. I know it is an overfilled industry and DS is realistic. However, having quite a bit of well regarded direction and editing under his belt, he is keen to give it a go. Am wondering if anyone has thoughts. Something irks me about Ravensbourne. I think he should go to art college, but he is more mainstream focussed. Of course, some might say go straight into industry. DS is very academic too. Should he actually do something else?!

My DS is studying at screenfilmschool.ac.uk (mentioned up the thread) and really enjoying.
The tutors and visiting speakers have really impressive (to me!) CV's and it's a very practical course. Facilities are good and student wellbeing seems important.

We did also look at a course in Sheffield uni which seemed good.

I did Media Production at Farnborough, with our degrees accredited by Uni of Surrey - that was a very practical course & lots of my friends now work in the media industry (including me, though not in a production role) including in camera work, production, producing etc.
No idea what the course is like now though - seems to be a condensed 2-Yr course instead of 3 years when I did it.

Can I jump onto this thread to ask a question? DD is yr10 considering post gcse options. At the moment she wants to do something in film production (behind the camera not in front) She really likes the look of the UAL level 3 diploma in creative media but I’m worried on two fronts - firstly that it’s narrowing her options too much (as opposed to broader a level choices) and secondly whether it really is worth the equivalent of 3 a levels they say it is in terms of potentially applying to Uni.
DH and I are old school in that vocational qualifications when we were that age were not worth much so trying to move on from that prejudice plus we are completely clueless about creative and media careers so don’t know where to go for advice

Piggywaspushed · 03/05/2023 05:57

In terms of pure , measurable worth (ie UCAS points ) yes, it is worth the same. Some unis still cock a snook at vocational qualifications - but not ones offering media/film production degrees. She'd build a portfolio (essential) and skills.

The main consideration is whether that option is narrowing her post18 options down too much.

Jumping in here. It’s a bit early for my DD but she is looking at Film and TV studies at Aberystwyth as it has a foundation year. Does anyone have any knowledge of the course? She wouldn’t be going until 2025 and I know things change. Or are there any other unis worth looking at that also have a foundation year?
Thanks

Screen School at LCC

Absolutely Salford with media city

Bayleaf25 · 03/05/2023 14:07

@Annkoskaextra to be honest I’d only consider a foundation year if you didn’t have enough ucas points/A’level grades to start the full UG (3 year degree). I’m guessing as you’re looking at 2025 entry you don’t have the predicted grades yet?

The foundation year adds another year of funding and study which might not be necessary. One of the places DS applied to offered him a place on the foundation course but he turned it down to start the regular degree somewhere else.

AUB (Bournemouth) have a foundation level, not sure about anywhere else.

JagerbombsUnite · 03/05/2023 14:07

Ravensbourne!

Annkoskaextra · 03/05/2023 14:24

@Bayleaf25
thanks. Yes she’s seen the a level grades her sister got and they’ve always had similar attainment so she is thinking if she gets accepted for 6form it would be something along the lines of CCC/CCD she would come out with.
makes me wonder wether she should actually look at a uni course with all the debt!
will take a look at Bournemouth- another one by the sea. That will tick a box for her thanks!!

Bayleaf25 · 03/05/2023 14:57

@Annkoskaextra also she will probably have to produce a portfolio, so if that’s good enough then the grades may be ‘less’ important in a way. Also any work experience in the creative sector / demonstrating her interest in film/tv will also help.

I teach film production. I think my course is great (I would say that) but I moved to my current uni for specific reasons. These were: having the majority of staff from the film industry rather than PhD holders who don't know how the industry works; having Screenskills accreditation and being in a city with loads of film production going on. (I moved from Bournemouth to my new uni.) The course is very practical but with lots of space for thinking about impact and ethics. We teach our student's collaboration- I'd be wary of too much art school auteurism because you need to be a team player to get a job.

Hi @tinselvestsparklepants , I know this is a very old thread, but I was wondering if you would mind if I sent a pm asking about your course? My ds is applying this year, is doing film studies at sixth form (alongside a couple of other subjects), and is keen on film / tv / media production courses. He has really enjoyed editing in the projects he has done at sixth form (and his tutors say he is good at it), and I think he is most keen on a practical-based course (rather than lots of exams etc!).

Hi@Luredbyapomegranate would you mind if I also pm you? I know things have changed in the industry over the last couple of years - are things still very dire in the industry for tech roles?

Hi @tizalinatuna , woukd you mind me asking where your dc chose in the end, and whether they are enjoying it / have feedback?

Thanks all :)
