Uni of Edinburgh not marking dissertations/final pieces of work - anyone else's DC affected?

DD heard this afternoon that her dissertation and final pieces of work are not to be marked by Uni of Edinburgh. She is absolutely devastated right now as she wanted her true degree result and feedback on hours of work. She feels her most recent work is the best, so will never know if she could have got her grade up. Moving forward she was seriously considering studying a masters abroad abroad and also working abroad, but now uncertain if that's possible as she thinks they'll wanted an athenticated degree.

It is an 11.8% pay rise from his previous base. After the COL crisis staff are much poorer than the 25% worse off we cite (that was before COL). PM’s pay rise is obscene and tone deaf.

MatureStudentToBeMaybe · 05/06/2023 22:04

Reading the article this has happened in many Scottish universities and he had no say in it. Though I note the VC of St Andrews's had the sense to donate her rise.

I wonder if the renumeration committees have to disclose the reasoning for their decisions? It's almost like they are trying to escalate the crisis.

poetryandwine · 06/06/2023 00:28

It hardly matters that PM and the other VCs technically have no say in their pay rises. They are (professional) pals with the members of their remuneration committees and it is all about scratching each others’ backs.

Agree it was smart for the St A’s VC to donate her pay rise, @MatureStudentToBeMaybe

The Tab Edinburgh has published the following,

"The University of Edinburgh has confirmed to The Tab Edinburgh that provisional grades will be awarded to students amidst the ongoing marking and assessment boycott, in an effort to mitigate the stress and disruption caused to the university community.

These grades will serve as a minimum guarantee, with the assurance that students’ final results can only improve once their work is finally marked."

DD originally had two essays and her dissertation awaiting marks, but has had one of her essays marked since then. Has anyone else's DC had any marks back in the last month?

DD (social science) hasn't had anything back yet. She thinks even if marked they won't get marks until Board of Examiners meet (so no provisional marks this year) and then get all back at once. Not important for DD as she is intermitting next year. Feel bad for final years.

If you're on twitter, you can see from the UCU Edinburgh twitter account what's happening. It's a scandal. It's not just Edinburgh. The same is happening at all 145 institutions in this dispute. We're just seeing the boycott play out at Edinburgh earlier because the exams and exam boards come a little earlier here. Parents and students should complain not just to the Principal but to the Higher Ed Minister at both Holyrood and Westminster, the Quality Assurance Agency for Scotland, anyone else they can think of, to put pressure on university leaders to part with some of the £44 billion they have in reserves. Edinburgh alone as £2.5 billion. I know reserves cannot be easily converted into staff salaries, but it shows the University line that they cannot afford to pay staff more is just not true.

This is a total face!

my eldest graduates in less than 3 weeks, outfit bought, gown hired and they doesn’t know what their end grade is!

Youngest has had half their 2nd year exam grades Back. This time last year both knew what their grades were.

MatureStudentToBeMaybe · 09/06/2023 19:57

I've noted the conversation is about devaluing degrees by not properly marking coursework/exams, but it seems it is being forgotten that a number of these courses were not properly taught. There was substantial disruption in semester 2 for some courses. Even if the MAB is resolved and papers marked, the students are not getting back their missed learning. The damage is done.

DN finished from Herriot Watt this year and was graded on her degree ok.

SandyIrvin · 15/06/2023 11:23

Just seen that Edinburgh UCU members have voted to strike every day for first 2 weeks of term 1 in September. DD on a placement year so not affected.

Dd will be affected then , great Hmm

MatureStudentToBeMaybe · 15/06/2023 11:34

Where have you seen this? Thanks

SandyIrvin · 15/06/2023 11:41

Terrible for students. Although I am sympathetic to staff. Not sympathetic to unis like Edinburgh that have the money to improve staff pay.

LIZS · 15/06/2023 11:44

Exactly. And can spend a fortune upgrading buildings like Teviot removing facilities for students in the meantime.

LIZS · 15/06/2023 11:48

I think w/c 11th is Freshers Week, so not teaching as such.

SandyIrvin · 15/06/2023 11:48

A lot of money being spent on Edinburgh Futures Institute too (Although maybe the deal they have done with the Book festival mitigates this a bit).

hanahsaunt · 15/06/2023 11:50

Ds graduates from Glasgow next week. They have advised it is essentially a dummy graduation since they have registered for it but he won't know his degree result. Just very sad for him. It hasn't been the university experience it ought to have been over the last four years.

SandyIrvin · 15/06/2023 11:52

Okay then maybe not so bad if one week is freshers but no introductory lectures or meetings with tutors to pick subjects.

MatureStudentToBeMaybe · 15/06/2023 11:55

I think that's welcome week and week 1 next academic year.

SandyIrvin · 15/06/2023 12:01

@hanahsaunt dummy graduation ceremony sounds awful. DS2 had one of those post covid graduations at Glasgow. It was a bit flat (and much less ceremonial) than my own graduation. I imagine the dummy graduation will be similar.

SandyIrvin · 15/06/2023 12:08

I saw that Edinburgh have a no detriment policy so guessing that means you will graduate with a provisional class and it might go up (but can't go down).

Teawaster · 15/06/2023 18:59

My DS was supposed to get the classification of his degree today as well as this being the last day for getting the results of year end exams and essays. He has everything except for a history assignment which is only worth about 12% of this years work . He has been told he will probably not have that result before graduation but will be allowed to graduate without a classification. From what we have worked out, he would have to do very poorly in his essay not to get a first , but we can't be sure. I really feel for him. Like everyone his first 2 years of Uni were spent at home, luckily he had a placement year abroad for his 3rd year , with the final year pretty normal. Now this has really taken the shine off everything and he will probably never get to celebrate the best bit, actually getting his degree, knowing what he got!

2chocolateoranges · 16/06/2023 07:53

Ds and his friend on another course have had their degree classification given out this week! Both got 2:1 and are delighted. This is University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.

so glad they can graduate this month and celebrate properly knowing what grade they actually got.

hope other universities get their grades out soon so the graduates can graduate normally without a cloud over them.

youngest is in 2nd year at same uni and has had 3 exam results back , still waiting on other 3.

LIZS · 16/06/2023 12:18

Today's strike is disrupting an open day. So goodness what prospective students will actually see of their departments and make of the picket line.
