Was wondering about the impact of grade boundaries reducing to 2019 levels

I've read that the A level grade boundaries are going back to approximately what they were in 2019 and was wondering how this will impact on the current year 13s their predictions, offers and results.
For example my ds is applying for Computer Science and two of his choices increased their standard offer by one grade this year. But if overall results are down this year but offers are higher on popular courses there seems a bit of a mismatch.

The universities will need to fill spaces so will adjust the grades they accept once the results are
out.

Nobody knows where exactly the grade boundaries will be until the papers are marked, this cohort has been so disrupted over the past 3 years and many taking A levels lack the "building blocks" they would have had if they had revised hard for the full curriculum in 2021. (The curriculum was reduced for the school based gcse exams). Schools and colleges have had to work hard to put these extra building blocks in place. What uni's can expect is that the same number of A stars, A, B, C's will be given out as in 2019.

Will grades definitely return to 2019 levels? Last year they aimed to cut the grade inflation by a half, but they only managed to cut it by a third? May a similar thing happen again?

redrobin75 · 31/03/2023 20:43

@StressedaboutUni , yes off the record some schools think the grades handed out may be of greater value than 2019 but no one knows including the exam boards.

Bobbybobbins · 31/03/2023 20:50

Think they will look for a similar proportion of A star, A, B etc to 2019 but what the boundaries are will depend on the cohort's performance. So if the marks across the country are lower than 2019 then I think the boundaries will be lower.

StressedaboutUni · 31/03/2023 20:56

@redrobin75 Thanks. Yes it probably is best to presume they will go back to 2019 even if they ultimately do not. Out of interest, why couldn’t Ofqual reduce grades by half in 2022 if they aimed to have done so. Surely it is just about ensuring x% get a*, y% get a etc

redrobin75 · 31/03/2023 21:03

@StressedaboutUni , I think it's linked to appreciating what a terrible 2 years the cohort had.

StressedaboutUni · 31/03/2023 21:12

@StressedaboutUni Yep that makes sense. They did have a tough time especially in year 12 with a levels. Hopefully there will be some leeway this year too!, though unlikely.

Oops sorry @redrobin75
