Career advice

We are not in the UK but am trying to assist DS with career discussions and have got a bit stuck. DS is a very outgoing, articulate, sporty type doing physics, chem, literature, human biology, two lots of maths. Doesn't want to do engineering apparently so what else should they look at. Trying for medicine is an option but what else?

I would only recommend Medicine if they really, really want to do it. I wouldn't say it was a career fir anyone who wasn't extremely motivated to be a Dr.

Is he broadly interesting in STEM or non STEM courses?

Bunnyannesummers · 25/03/2023 23:23

Try a couple of careers quizzes. UK government national careers service one as well as the iCould buzz quiz. Look at the results and research them, give him some ideas. But equally important, helps him cross some stuff off. Where he likes an idea, what is it he likes about it? Work from there

Thanks all - we have tried some quizzes but they dont really help. Mainly as DS is such a mix of things. I would say STEM but doesn't really love ICT. Also a great public speaker - drama type. Although doesn't do it as a subject - but is lead in school play??

So when he does the quizzes and get results he needs to think ‘yes I like that idea’ or ‘no I don’t’. Then on the ones he doesn’t like - why? Ditto the ones he does like.

This needs to be about what he wants not what you as the parent wants. He needs to research careers and courses.

BlueHeelers · 28/03/2023 10:57

The UK education system tends to push young people into either STEMM or HASS. Which is a huge pity. Maybe he could look at the Scottish universities - a 4 year system, where you do a wider range of subjects in Years 1 and 2.

Digital Humanities might be a possibility, but if he's not interested in ICT that might not be great for him.

@Itsallok Law. Then be a barrister. Sounds like he would enjoy it.
