Has anyone got experience of choosing catered at Uni of York? I thought I’d ask for my daughter as she’ll have to shortlist her 7 it’s a lot money to do catered in some of the colleges but far more so if you don’t use it as meal times are inconvenient or you don’t like the food

Hi. Does any have any experience of applying to university as a young carer? I have a DH who is physically disabled and had lots of major surgery and recovery periods over the years which have obviously had an impact on family life. We don’t get any outside help except DH is on the highest level of PIP. It affects the DC to varying degrees. They don’t spend all day every day helping with chores but they usually have to do a couple of things every day to help out (fetching medical equipment, making tea etc). At times they’ve had their lives massively disrupted and have had to do more to help out. I know there are organisations I can talk to but I really want to talk to anyone else with experience of what the life of a young carer looks like before we even think about mentioning this to prospective universities.
Thanks for reading.

DC is there now, and very happy with the food.
It's Mon-Fri breakfast and dinner. Several choices and plenty of food.

Great for socialising too. Their flat would go altogether for dinner in the first few weeks, and now they will still go with whoever's around.

We looked at various halls options and wanted Halifax self-catered, because of the low cost.

The next step up in cost is a choice between catered or an en-suite bathroom.
West or East campus?
Older colleges (West) or shiny new ones (East).

Some of the East colleges include a college dinner once a week on a fixed day.

@user146539089 - you would be better starting your own thread on this board. Also look at WIWIKAU on Facebook - lots of great advice can be found there. Good luck.

Thanks. I made a mistake posting on here and have just started my own thread.

That’s good to hear we’re just having traumas right now as didn’t realise you have to Inc 3 shared bathroom options in your seven choices oh they’ll be sharing the year after so may as well get used to it!

From memory, pretty sure the "catering" is via canteen style cafes and there's a pretty wide choice of menu options to choose from for each course.

Badbadbunny · 17/03/2023 19:27

Breakfast is 8-10.30
Evening meal is 5-7-30

redspottedmug · 17/03/2023 19:44

Given the choice of own bathroom or being fed, for a similar outlay, DC felt food was better value. Also the shared bathrooms are cleaned daily (I think) and loo roll is supplied. En-suites aren't cleaned, and you have to buy own loo roll!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts still working on choosing her seven to be honest i don’t think catered will appear too highly if at all, more likely the one meal a week in East, her first job in sixth form was serving tea to Durham Uni students at St Mary’s so she’s knows the score and doesn’t think it’s for her but we’ll see

DD having similar thoughts. I’m trying to get my head around the 40 v 44 weeks. I don’t understand why they’d stay for 4 weeks in summer. Any ideas?

NotDonna · 05/04/2023 22:14

@Myjobisanightmare have you read that York are moving to semesters so there’ll be a 38 week year including Easter and Christmas holidays. I’m not understanding why the accommodation isn’t matching this.

Hmm I knew about semesters but thought the amount of weeks there was the same just spread out differently but I hadn’t checked

to be honest I’ll be amazed if my kid gets the grade for their firm York but that’s another story
