PPE Warwick or Durham?

DurhamWarwick · 03/03/2023 19:46

DD has identical offers for both to study PPE.

She likes both universities, both visited.

I think Warwick is a target uni for finance and she wants to major in economics and go down that route. PPE dept seemed very impressive.

Durham obviously very pretty, collegiate. She’s social and will be fine at either.

Anyone have a view?

@TizerorFizz @dew141 Durham is good and there is not much in it but depends on what the OPs DD wants to do next. The course at Warwick is more flexible you can choose to do a BA or BSc depending on components studied. It could be argued that if she wants to major in Economics and she wants to keep her options open for a career in Finance/the City that then Warwick's (BSc) route is likely to be a better route that Durham's (BA). I don't know how long this has been the case but over the last few years whilst DCs have been applying for Uni this has been the case. Warwick seems to be recognised as having degrees with a quant focus which is often attractive to some employers in Finance. If she has chosen @DurhamWarwick which did she pick?

Also I should have said desirable rather that prestigious in respect of Durham vs Warwick.

She's got until 8th June to decide, though...

yes but the topic has been done to death!

Go to Durham. It's a beautiful city which very few students regret going to. Everywhere is walkable and the collegiate system is fantastic.

Employers won't differentiate between Durham and Warwick - at least the last 2 global corporates I've worked at don't.

Its not unusual for them to be indecisive when they are high ranking universities which are so closely matched.

I went to Warwick and actually really enjoyed campus life in my first year. Literally everything happens in the Union for social things - it’s massive and a real hub for meeting new people. It also means that drinks etc are cheaper!!!! When I wanted a quieter night we’d just hang out in kitchens, bedrooms or hallways - hallway parties were “a thing”.

We actually moved to Coventry for our second and third years and many students do. Lots of people think Leam is cooler, but actually, my house was much better quality, cheaper, walking distance to a massive supermarket, takeaways etc and only a 10-15 minute bus ride away. We continued going to union events for nights out mainly. If we went into Coventry then it was mainly to the cinema or restaurants.

Being in Coventry also gives you great train access both north and south with direct trains to London and north (Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh etc). I also loved Durham but it’s a loooooong way north.

My ds graduated from Warwick two years ago and lived in Coventry not leamington. Leamington is a more attractive place to live, but the bus to and from campus is a pain, especially if you have lectures at the beginning and end of the day and don’t want to stay on campus all day. Also agree with pp that Coventry is cheaper for accommodation. Ds and friends had a nice place with two bathrooms, dishwasher, utility room. Warwick is also convenient for job interviews eg ds went to Birmingham, London and Guildford for interviews and Birmingham is a doddle from Coventry

any need to be quite so rude..?

DH and I also lived in Coventry for second year (though I worked in Leamington lol)

Much nicer houses, no slugs for a start. The bus was better too. You could nearly always get a seat from Earlsdon. You could also walk it if so inclined. Hearsall common was nice in the summer as was the war memorial park.

Really short walk into Cov city centre and the train station. Easy to get to the coach station too which was handy for me.

In first year the social life revolves around the union for sure. We'd be there at least 2-3 nights a week. In my day it was Top Banana on a Monday (where I met DH infant) and then School Disco on the weekend. A cheap pint of purple and happy days lol.

DibbleDooDah · 16/04/2023 16:22

@Twizbe Top Banana was the BEST night out.

Oh it was £10 for the whole night including a burger from the van outside our halls. This were the days.

Varsity was even better with a night out just being £5....

Ah memories ...

@DurhamWarwick yeah lived there in my second and third years and it was great! It's a small place but still a decent nightlife. Good shops and a lot going on, everything is walkable too from the top end to the bottom end of Leam. There's a lovely huge park there called Jepson Gardens and we spent most of our time there in the summer.

North end of Leam parade is a bit posher.

Ahh I feel so nostalgic now!

Leamington has got quite run down in the last few years, even worse post covid.

Lots of the shops have shut and either empty or replaced with rubbish chains selling 99p cards or Wilco stuff. It’s nothing like it was previously.
