Mine will be working alongside me at my summer residential course for foreign teenagers. She'll be an Activity Leader so taking the kids on trips, organizing afternoon and evening activities and pastoral duties. She first did it last year and loved it. Hard work but very rewarding. Plus the activity leaders are all university students so they have a great social life as well. DD put £3000 away for 5 weeks work.

Dd worked in shops, bars & cafes. As she was doing a vocational degree there wasn’t really a need to get an internship as there was a clear route after graduation.

Ds1 was in first year when Covid started so we did not want him working that summer (plus opportunities were quite limited) He got a month’s relevant work the summer after 2nd year & then did a placement year & his placement company will give him a summer job this year too.

Ds2 is not doing a vocational degree so not sure what he will do. Some sort of internship would be good but as long as he does something (and is not lazing about while I am at work) I don’t care.

My eldest in 1st year at Oxbridge where vacations are very long! But DC is so knackered after the high pressure term, it takes a while to gear up to do anything at first! DC doesn't do paid work though - other than a bit of sports refereeing. However, does fill the days doing rowing, martial arts and having driving lessons. Also, DC has uni work to do during the hols - typically two hours a day.

My 3 DC did hotel/fast food/supermarket/barista/sports coaching. They sorted trips (music festivals and Med resorts not build an orphanage or trek across Antarctica) themselves so no need for a company.

DS1 did a vocational degree with a placement so no need for internship.

DS2 didn't bother with internships preferring to work part-time term-time/full-time holidays. Worked out fine for him as he landed a Big Tech grad scheme despite a very general degree.

DD has applied for lots of internships and placements this year. Uni dept, society and career service been useful. Has found the process time consuming with quite early deadlines for some, others cancelled at short notice etc.

Dd will fit in as many shifts as she can manage at the warehouse to fund her various holidays/festivals/trips to see friends! She might also find time to go on holiday with us... Plus this year, unfortunately, she missed her January exams because of illness, so she's having to keep a couple of weeks in August free to take them, which she's very annoyed about!

I think maybe next year (end of second year) she should think about doing some relevant work experience to help her decide what to do after her Psychology degree. For now, it's mainly about earning money and having fun..

I also notice that my kids like to come home for the holidays and work locally, maybe partly because they all went away for uni. Whereas I and my siblings went to a local uni so were home more a lot at weekends - we all did working holidays abroad in the summers.

DD has a job up here as a barista and one in her uni town too, so she'll need to decide where to work for the summer. She's also doing two weeks 'voluntary' abroad on a wildlife sanctuary where you have to pay for the pleasure of doing voluntary work

DD did internships in first and second year, plans to do it again for third year. She also has her friends and b/f where she lives so she likes to stay in her uni city. She comes home for a couple of weeks to see us old folks., and we do get to see her every few weeks when we visit her for the weekend/she comes to us during term time.
