Registering with a local GP

I understand it's advised to register with a local GP when DC move away to university.

But what happens if they are on a waiting list for investigations or diagnosis in your local area? Presumably they would have to come off the local waiting list and start again in the area local to their new GP?

Neither of mine did. Ds was near enough to come back and dd has ongoing reviews but tries to schedule appointments for vacations.

You are correct, it's actually sometimes easier to stay registered at home especially if not going too far but if you are likely to need support at university eg my dd has ongoing counselling, being registered at the university practice is important

DD2 stayed registered with our local one even though Uni is 200+ miles away. With so many appointments being by phone it's not been a problem. And she can get prescriptions sent to a local pharmacy if needed.

If your DC is not going too far then in your situation I would stay registered at home. NHS waiting list are horrendous at moment so you don't want them to go back to bottom of the list in Uni town!

DC can either do telephone appointment with current GP or can do emergency temp registration at Uni for any ailment they develop which needs urgent treatment.
If it's for management of an ongoing condition then DC can come home for appointments for that, unless of course they're an 8 hour journey away.
