Funding for a second degree in healthcare

JJ456 · 03/02/2023 12:02

I have stumbled into a career in healthcare which I love, but as I don’t have any qualifications I feel a bit stuck in my current role as I have worked my way up, but any other job in my pay band would be inaccessible to me because I don’t have the qualifications to back me up!

My question is, will student finance fund a second degree if it is an NHS allied health professional course? The qualification I want to do (Radiography) is also a shortage one at the moment.

I’ve seen some hints that they will, but did want to check as the information available on the internet is hit and miss. Don’t seem to be able to contact student finance without making an application!

I admit I know nothing about the NHS funding aspect - but if you have a first degree you should be eligible for a Government Postgraduate Loan for any postgrad degree. Which makes Master’s level study more accessible than a second first degree for most people.

Btw, you may find more specific info on the Mature Study and Retraining board - lots of people with experience of accessing funding to move through the NHS ranks.

I think (but do check) that you'd do the 2 year masters rather than the undergrad course, which is funded and also attracts the NHS bursary of £5k pa.

SnarkyBag · 03/02/2023 13:08

They did when I retrained but I don’t if that’s changed now the nhs bursary funding has changed

Sorry I also should have mentioned I’ve maxed out my masters’ loan too! So I can only train with special considerations from NHS or whatever!

Ahhhh …

There are degree apprenticeships available in Radigraphy now. These are fully funded and you get paid whilst you train...

Yes you're still eligible for fee and maintenance plus the bursary - see here for example: https://www.bcu.ac.uk/health-sciences/about-us/school-blog/support-whilst-studying

I had quite a long conversation with SFE via Messenger, back when DD went off incommunicado with World Challenge between A levels and results day byw
It is also usially possible to have questions answered in the 'ask SFE' forum on TSR.

Thanks! That’s really helpful. Looks like I may be able to get my degree after all.
