Student loan question

Hi, my daughter is off to uni this year and will be almost 20. My partner moved in this year but he does not financially support her in any way - do I have any right to appeal against his income being taken into consideration?

I remember this coming up on a Martin Lewis programme and he looked into it and unfortunately the answer was no it's based on household income so your partners income would be included. So much wrong with the student finance system.

Wow I’m not surprised tbh, thanks for coming back to me. Is that gross, and do they factor in other kids still at home?

If you follow Martin Lewis on Instagram he has posted a video today or there is lots of info on his moneysupermarket website. It's a very unfair system based on the income of the household that she lives at only.

You can see how income is assessed here. It is residual income that is used.

“gross income (before tax and National Insurance) and taking off allowances for the following:
payments into private pension schemes, additional voluntary contributions and employment-related costs
£1,130 for any child other than you who is totally or mainly financially dependent on them
*£1,130 if your parent is also a student”

No your partner's income is included in the household income

Just picking this up again as I have been filling the details in today. It’s asked me for my 2021/2022 tax year income, and asked me for my partners but we only moved in together May 22 - grounds to argue his shouldn’t count for her first year?!?!

No because although they use the income for the last full tax year your partner will be contributing to household income for the student year. So they still need to add in their income details for the tax year they weren't even living there.
