Anyone have experience of the uni or the city.
what’s it like being a student in Norwich? Is there much to do in the area?

This small uni has just crossed my radar, and keeping it in mind for DD2.

I know Norwich a little and it's a great city. I do wonder if NUA has a lot of commuting students.

PhotoDad · 01/02/2023 19:57

NUA was on my DD's shortlist, and we looked around the city. It's a lovely place! It has a decent reputation, too and I know a couple of people who went there and enjoyed it, albeit some time ago. (In the end DD fell in love with a different art-school and was lucky enough to get an offer there.)

mumma24 · 01/02/2023 19:58

Thanks @fortyfifty it’s for my DD too for this years admissions. We missed the open events and the next one is not until June.
its a 7 hour round trip for us so need an idea if it worth a visit. She has an offer to study there.
Thinking of driving up just to look at the area.

Norwich is a nice city, but very small. Not really like a city, more a town.

lbnblbnb · 01/02/2023 20:02

Norwich is great, lots of quirky independent shops, cafes etc and all the chains if that is your thing. Regularly tops surveys of best city to be a student in. Not like Manchester, true, but definitely a city, not a town.

MrsMitford3 · 01/02/2023 20:08

I will come on waving my Norwich banner.

DD has her undergrad degree and now doing Masters.

She has had a brilliant experience.
Great, passionate involved lecturers. Really nice cohort. Beautiful campus. Fantastic city-feels safe. Very vibrant-shopping, restaurants, pubs, huge outdoor market. We love visiting.
One thing I liked is that there is only one taxi firm in norwich. If a student is out late/feels unsafe and can't get home they can hail a taxi with student ID and the Uni covers it and bill you.

Feel free to ask or DM me with any specific questions.

Thank you @lbnblbnb she loves a charity shop. Hoping there’s a few of those too 🤔

I was born in Norwich, moved away and now live in Norwich. I am not sure where the PP got the idea that it is ‘more like a town’. I lived in London for 17 years too and can confirm that Norwich is indeed, like a city.

Massively friendly, great for athletes, great for independent shops, coffee shops, the arts, making friends, shopping isn’t bad, prices much more reasonable than when I lived in London. UEA (the uni) also has a great reputation, very low tragedy rate mental health-wise compared to other universities, they have therapy dogs in the medical school for the students. Great campus and loads of places to rent. Decent bus network too. I vote yes! X

Sounds wonderful thank you @MrsMitford3

Norwich is a great place to be a student. There’s loads going on because there’s both NUA (in a lovely part of town) and the UEA (campus but most students live/socialise in town). It has a very left-wing, arty, chilled scene. More like a small Bristol-Brighton-Stoke Newington vibe rather than a typical provincial cathedral city. Great nightlife with lots of bars, clubs, live music. Great shopping. Safe, affordable, and beautiful too. Unless your DD wants the big city life I’d really recommend it.

NeedToKnow101 · 01/02/2023 20:23

I was just listening to a 6 Music thing about live music in Norwich. They were just saying what a brilliant place it is for live music and how loads of students stay there after uni.

Charity Shops - lots. Best one is the Sue Ryder vintage on Bridewell Alley.

mumma24 · 01/02/2023 21:18

@LauraDLoves sounds wonderful. DD loves Brighton so if it’s a smaller version of that it’s perfect for her

We looked at it for DD. I thought it was great, I loved the city.

DD did not think the course was right for her, and subsequently had no interest in what was available re:shops and cafes (I had a great days out!).

I liked that they gave us pukka tea, boarders biscuits and had nice toilets. Cue DD rolling her eyes at me. Had the course been right, I'd have been happy for DD to go there, despite it not being easy to get to from where we live.

That would please me too 😆

mumma24 · 16/02/2023 16:24

@LynetteScavo which course was it she didn’t like there? My daughter is applying for Illustration. Thank you

LynetteScavo · 16/02/2023 17:03

@mumma24 - it wasn't illustration.

mumma24 · 16/02/2023 17:32

@LynetteScavo ok than you

@mumma24 Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but can I ask which decision your daughter made in the end?

my daughter has been offered an unconditional place at Norwich Arts and although initially it wasn’t her first choice is now reconsidering, it’s much closer to home for us than her first choice, although still around 100 miles.

Thank you.

MrsMitford3 · 19/01/2024 18:10

@Johaanah Just coming on to say one of my DD's (UEA) housemates in her third year was a student at Norwich Arts and loved it.

It's a fantastic, vibrant city to be an art student for sure!!
