Ucas points/grades offer

Hi.

DD has received an offer of 104 points, to come from A level grades CCC.
Obviously, CCC adds up to 96. She also has a LAMDA grade 7 dist.
She is on course for BBE (96 points).
Do you think she'll be offered a place? (assuming she gets these grades).

Former admissions tutor here. This could go either way. We are not the right people to ask. You need to contact the admissions tutors for guidance.

My own perspective is that BBE is essentially two ALs, hence pretty far off. But BBD looks good compared to CCC and I would vote to admit on BBD. Probably also on BCD. Any chance she could bring that E up to a D?

What course and university?

cosmobrown · 27/01/2023 16:28

@Bunnyannesummers
Cardiff Met - Education, Psychology and Special Needs.
Quite a niche degree I would imagine.

They can be more flexible but it depends on the terms of the offer - if the 104 needs to be from three grades Cs or above an E wouldn’t meet that. If it’s just 104 points which would be equal to CCC, then doesn’t matter where the points come from. She’s needs to read her offer letter carefully or chat to admissions.

Bunnyannesummers · 27/01/2023 17:50

Looking at the entry requirements on the website it states:

A level subjects: Minimum three A levels to include grades CCC. No specific subjects required. Welsh Baccalaureate – Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate considered as a third subject.

So I would say BBE would not meet the terms of her offer.

When applicants do not meet their offer, admission is at the discretion of the admissions tutors, hence my comments above. Do note that contacting them to plead one’s case is a very bad idea and will almost surely harden them against the candidate

TizerorFizz · 27/01/2023 18:53

It’s going to depend on numbers applying. If few, they wilL take a gamble. Best bet is to try and get E to a D.

cosmobrown · 27/01/2023 20:41

Thanks All.
Maybe a stretch too far then. The E is Chemistry which she really struggles with. I think she'll be unlikely (but of course not impossible) to get up to a D.

@cosmobrown
Thats such a shame she took Chemistry! There are easier A levels. Could she consider doing another year and one A level that’s easier? Not sure if that’s doable but she’s messed up her third choice and being punished.

cosmobrown · 27/01/2023 22:13

I know. It's such a shame. She's had to overcome a lot in her secondary schooling, and we're very proud of her. I wish we could go back and get her to do a different A level. One of the problems was that she had to move school at the last minute for A levels, and of course she had to fit into their teaching blocks, as well as the staff not knowing her.

Ah well. She has a lot to offer, but not necessary in Chemistry!

I feel your pain, Dd is predicted BBD with her grotty grade being a science.

Her first choice offer is 112 ucas points from minimum 2 alevels, all I can say she did epq last year and got a b.

But her chosen subject is incredibly mainstream and she’ll get in somewhere. She wants go into teaching as well but has decided to go general degree then pgce.

Don’t forget university access courses. If she doesn’t get her grades it may delay her ambitions but doesn’t stop them.
