RUK fees at Scottish unis?

Pumpkin354 · 23/01/2023 17:38

Hoping for easy clarification on this? I had understood that a student from England would pay usual fee for 3 out of the 4 years of a Scottish degree? I can see this on Glasgow’s website but not Edinburgh or St Andrew’s? Is it a universal thing? Thanks

Some, not all, Scottish unis cap fees at three years, for most subjects. You’ll need to check each individually.

@Withholdingvitalinfo thanks. That is potentially a game changer then. It’s odd as friend who told me about the cap has a Dd at Edinburgh but I can’t see anything on their website, so maybe it’s changed.

I’d be calling admissions to make sure I think.

Edinburgh and St A's have confirmed that there is no cap, so it seems Glasgow is not the norm.

Depends what you mean by the norm.

Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian, Glasgow Uni, Aberdeen, Highlands & Islands, Heriot Watt, Napier, Queen Margaret, UWS etc etc all offer it.

@Withholdingvitalinfo Can you let me know where Heriot Watt provide this information please ? I don't see any mention of it on their undergraduate fees web page

Do you think they do four year degrees but only pay for three years? Or are you saying they pay higher fees in the fourth year?

SandyIrvine · 24/01/2023 23:27

I remember some Scottish unis saying they were changing to support poorer RUK students every year rather than one year support for all RUK students. I can understand as Edinburgh has more than 50% privately educated RUK.

User76765 · 25/01/2023 06:19

I’ve looked and edinburgh and at andrews definitely don’t seem to be offering the free year to RUK students. No mention of it at all on their websites.

@User76765 Glasgow is the only place where I see reference to it - their UG fees web page states that RUK fees are capped to £27,750 for 4 year courses, i.e. equivalent of 3 year's annual payment of £9,250

Many of the unis you have to go into a course and look at fees that way.

eg Strathclyde

@User76765 i emailed Edinburgh and St Andrews yesterday and they both confirmed fees due for all years of a course. As far as I can work out though, if you do a language degree with a mandatory year abroad then it is no different cost wise than a 4yr language degree (or joint hons) in England or Wales.

Sorry was using a book for quick reference so may not be accurate for 2023/24. I see they now offer bursaries instead.

worth checking bursaries etc as well as I know some unis offer eg £1k additional bursaries for accommodation as well as the 3 year fee cap

WarningToTheCurious · 25/01/2023 07:26

Heriot-Watt offers a £1500 travel bursary to rUK students.
