Graduation gown hire

To cut a very long story short my DD has her masters graduation tomorrow and has not sorted gown hire as she wasn't going to go and changed her mind at the last minute. She has contacted them but they haven't got back to her. Does anyone know if they keep any spares that they hire on the day?

I don’t know - but they might. Otherwise she might be able to borrow someone else’s just for the photo?

Either way it’s not the end of the world. Half the people at my last graduation just went in a nice outfit and didn’t hire a gown at all.

Thanks for replying @Gruelle . Would you mind sharing where you graduated from. At her undergrad graduation ( and both of mine) everyone was wearing gowns.

Postgrad, specialist institution.

And yes, I imagine people are more likely to wear the full costume for first degree graduations.

mushroom3 · 12/12/2022 17:24

If it's Swansea, I think they have said spare gowns will be available

Yourownpersonaljesus · 12/12/2022 17:31

It's LSE.

Is it Ede and Ravenscroft? I think they bring extra gowns

Yourownpersonaljesus · 12/12/2022 21:49

I'm pretty sure it is @mushroom3. Thanks.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 12/12/2022 22:04

Thanks for your reply @Carriemac.

A my DSs graduation a few turned up at the last minute and got gowns , and photos without being pre booked

Have sent you a pm

burnoutbabe · 13/12/2022 08:28

No one would be allowed to attend not in gown.

But I imagine they have spairs as people don't turn up or get size wrong.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 13/12/2022 08:39

Thanks all.

I assume you are speaking of a particular event, at a particular institution, @burnoutbabe? As that was absolutely not the situation at my own graduation ceremony.

RampantIvy · 13/12/2022 09:02

At DD's graduation they do something with the hood of the gown, so wearing the gown is an integral part of the ceremony.

Yes I was speaking of the few I have attended where it was compulsory.
Maybe some places don't care but the majority would enforce it for all graduating.

So need to check with the university faq

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 13/12/2022 09:08

I work at a similar place to LSE and we keep spare gowns

Carriemac · 13/12/2022 10:35

Obviously you need to wear a gown, the question was would there be spare available

It's very unusual to be able to rock up to your own graduation, walk across the stage etc without wearing the correct gown tbh.

GCAcademic · 13/12/2022 10:42

They will have spare gowns. But it’s not clear from the OP whether the DD has registered for graduation itself. If not, that will be far more of a problem as the distribution of certificates, running order, seating, etc can’t accommodate students just rocking up on the day.

RampantIvy · 13/12/2022 12:28

@GCAcademic has made some excellent points.

EmmaC78 · 13/12/2022 12:31

Agree there will be spare gowns but unless she has registered she won't be able to attend. Seating plans, certificates etc are all finalised before so we wouldn't let anyone just turn up on the day.

Gruelle · 13/12/2022 12:46

I’m completely assuming the OP’s DD has officially confirmed her attendance and received affirmation thereon!

As I’ve said, at my relatively recent postgrad ceremony plenty of people walked across the stage to receive their certificates in just a suit or a nice dress. Gowns were entirely optional. Venerable London institution, Ede & Ravenscroft, blah, blah … I’m not making it up!

Carriemac · 13/12/2022 12:57

Really ? I suppose that's progressive , although we've had 5 (yes 5 ) graduations in the past 2 years and some of the dress codes were incredibly strict ( ancient universities) and some just specified gown and hood colours
