Question on MFL at Lancaster uni

DD wants to study 2 languages at degree level but she's only studied one at A level. Most unis are ok with this except for Lancaster for Modern Languages. However she would qualify for language 'A' Studies and language 'B' studies that they also offer. DD has looked at the their website and not really sure on what the difference is (unfortunately we didn't go to their open day). Does anyone know? Her school deadline for submitting UCAS forms is next week and has 6 unis in the running, not sure which to drop!

Sorry can’t help with specifics but DD loved Lancaster Uni on the open day (so did we)
Nice size and everyone was so lovely and helpful

Thanks, that's good to know!

Their web site says joint honours MFL is 50/50. Her second language must be offered as ab initio I would assume. So what languages is she choosing? They seem to offer a third choice if wanted too. It’s mighty confusing though. Students seem to pick and choose what they do quite a lot.

My DD did MFL joint honours elsewhere. No ab initio as she had the A levels. Others who did ab initio had to study this language in y1 and catch up. Classes amalgamated in y2. Dd never wanted or needed a third MFL.

I think DD should ask the admissions tutor by phone on Monday, what they offer for mfl
joint honours and exactly how it works. DDs university seemed more straightforward.

Thanks for confirming it's not clear. DD doesn't particularly want to take a 3rd language so looks like she'd need to choose another 'minor'? Seems unnecessarily complicated!

DD had decided that she'll apply for 3, this week, see what comes back and add last 2 in Jan (her 6th form allow this). It gives her a chance to contact departments & compare courses again.

@InDIYHell
It does seem there is a minor as a second or third option but it also says joint honours is 50/50. As my DD went 10 years ago to Bristol I admit being out of date, but what she did was a lot simpler. No sampling anything else to see if you liked it! Choice made snd you got on with it. However she went with 2 MFL A levels snd that’s more straightforward too! However I would contact them.

Lancaster is a Part 1, Part 2 university. In the first Year you take modules from up to three subjects and you have to pass but the marks don't count towards your degree. Years 2 and 3 are together known as part 2 and this counts towards your degree.

She would be best speaking to admissions. It's a fabulous university.

I went to lancaster originally with joint honours in french and mathematics, my third module was italian (never studied it before but thought it would be fun) although i nearly took creative writing, other of my friends took a criminology module. I then actually switched to a joint honours maths and italian degree in second year. Some degrees are formed of the three parts in first year so you can’t play around with subjects - i seem to remember law was one.

My DS is at Lancaster. He started doing 2 languages - one post A and one ab initio (but swapped course in Y2 but that's a whole other story!) It will depend on what languages. You might need to search differently. Their Modern Languages is a very specific course. My DS's course was RR14. Email the department. They were very helpful and they love MFL students! The uni is fab. DS having a great time and doing well.
