Any ideas for option switching Southampton or Lancaster

DD has submitted her application, one of her options is Southampton for Chemistry with medicinal sciences (applied on 30/11) she is now having second thoughts about switching this with Lancaster for the same subject but with industrial placement- what are your thoughts, any DC experience in either university?

Has she used all five choices?

And Southampton don’t offer a 4 yr option with placement? I’m guessing shes not been to the open day? Has she Looked at some online virtual info/videos plus YouTube and vlogs? DD hasn’t visited York but seems to think she’s gleaned enough info from all the online info to make an application. If your daughter is having second thoughts she’s a few days to make the change. Isn’t Ucas rule 14 days?
We visited Lancaster but not Southampton so can’t give a comparison also totally different subject. But DD really liked it - incredibly friendly.

@NotDonna thanks for responding, yes she used her 5 options. We have been to a few open days but none of them are in her list 🤦‍♀️ Southampton is the only course not offering placement options and we have been hearing a lot of good things about Lancaster she really likes the modules as well. She still has 10 days to change her mind, already got one offer from Nottingham.

DD did her degree and masters at Lancaster, not the same subject, and absolutely loved her time tnere.

It’s so hard isn’t it? My DD wants a placement year too - Lancs prior to the open day was ABB for both the 3 & 4 year courses so she was going to have it as her insurance as already had a few at AAB. But after the open day the 4 yr version jumped to AAB. The 3yr stayed at ABB but the placement year for her was a non negotiable so she added York despite not visiting. Otherwise she really liked Lancs and would have put it on her list with a view to having it as an insurance. She only applied to 4 though as she wanted to ensure York offered lower than standard (ie ABB) with her core maths (they did). If they’d offered her the standard then she’d have put Lancaster’s 3 year version as her 5th choice. Luckily York offered within days and with the tariff she wants. Really double check that the 3&4 year courses are the same entry requirements as we were quite surprised Lancs suddenly weren’t. I’ve not noticed other universities doing this.

Oh that's not fair to change the requirements after open days!! The only one is Exeter that has different requirements for placement year, others are the same entry requirements but will double check now in case they changed - my DD also AAB predicted. Glad to hear your DD got into the place she wanted in the end! It is so difficult I guess 5 choices not enough😆😆

She just texted me she is really confused now getting scared she might not get the grades needed- she really doesn't have any insurance or fallback option- all her options are BBB- so there is Lincoln accepting BBC for her subject and also giving unconditional offers but she is now thinking of swapping with Lincoln one of her choices now she thinks she should have a fall back - any ideas on Lincoln? Argghhhh pulling my hair

It sounds lie she is panicking and a bit of the imposter syndrome has set in?

She must have had reasons for picking the original 5 so she really ought to stick with them. If she does miss her grades slightly , she might get her place anyway. If she swaps she might then start overthinking the swap!

Lancaster is great but so is Southampton - and it has a particularly good STEM reputation and is - ahem MN klaxon alert- a Russell Group uni.

Is soem of this being influenced by peers.

Piggywaspushed · 08/12/2022 17:11

Sorry, there should be a ? on the end otherwise that sounded very abrupt!!

Selok · 08/12/2022 19:08

@Piggywaspushed yes I think the same she was panicking then she came home and we talked about it- she made her research and decided she doesn't want to go to Lincoln and she will stick to her options. Worst scenario, she has the clearing option
