So this is an unusual situation. DS has offers from both his current firm favourite and his favourite insurance universities. He is waiting on St Andrews which is likely to take months we understand. St Andrews is a punt but if he got an offer he would firm it..

In the meantime he has a new very relevant achievement which might help his application. Think something like winning an essay competition. It’s directly relevant to the course he wants to do.

is there a way of flagging this. Can his school update their references for example. Or should he email admissions to let them know about it (or is that a no no). Or is it just tough?

Maybe email admissions?

Yes that was my first thought too but he's worried it isn't the done thing.

bumping again in case anyone knows for sure.

This is the downside of an early application!

He will need to ask admissions whether they will accept an update, whether the update he proposes is worthwhile, and if the answer is 'yes' to both of those things, how he should submit such an update.

It will vary by university. At the university where I work, which is not St Andrews, we will accept updates but would advise him that winning an essay competition does not constitute a significant update in relation to how we make decisions about applications.

He can mention it at interview?
He can email admossions and ask if it is really boosting his chances

St Andrews don't interview for his course. I think its probably worth an email. It isn't winning an essay competition but its a similar thing and is quite prestigious. He has higher predicted grades for the course and a good personal statement already but the course is very competitive and it's directly relevant. It isn't the sort of thing that on its own would guarantee a place but if they are choosing between lots of candidates in the same predicted grade tier it could make a difference.

Thanks for your help all.
