Goldsmiths and London City

Hello, DS is interested in Goldsmiths and London City for psychology degree.
We are not from London. DS is not particularly streetwise. He would be living in halls and only coming home in the longer holidays.
Do many students commute in? Are there students around at the weekend other than the internationals. What are the local areas like? We haven’t visited.
Thanks!

I went to goldsmiths. Not sure what you mean about commuting in. Do you mean going to central London? It's about 20 mins to London Bridge. Very easy. I loved goldsmiths and had a great time. There's a big student population

I mean commute in from home. Like it’s a job. DS will be in halls. As we live far away.
when wereyou there @NameIsBryceQuinlan ?

Where do you live? I was there ten years ago. It's more gentrified around new cross and Peckham now.

I did an MA at Goldsmiths and people travelled from around London.
The area isn't as grim as it was when I was there but it is still one of my least favorite areas of London.

I actually really disliked Goldsmiths as an institution and was really glad I was only there for two years. It is the only university I've attended that I would suggest people really check out before signing up to go.

@frozengoose

I don't know if you agree but I think an MA experience is very different to BA, funny enough I didn't enjoy my MA which as at a supposed "great uni" I think you're less enveloped in the life there, more seperate.

I loved the course content at goldsmiths it was brilliant. And I met my DH there so there's that ☺️

An MA is different I think and I just wasn't a great fit for Goldsmiths.
My course was very virtue signaling and there was really only ever one acceptable way to think, which got trying.
The department itself offered very little support to SEN students despite the overt political posturing around being anti-discriminatory and pro diversity.

My experience with my undergraduate RG university was a lot less right on posturing but more practical help. Likewise the two post MA experiences I've had.

I'm not saying don't go, just go and check it is going to be a good fit for you.

I was at goldsmith in the 'noughties' and lived in close by halls for the first year, most people did. Most people were around at weekends. It's close to lots of nice areas eg Greenwich and blackheath and very easy to get into central london. Living in london is very expensive so you/he needs to check it's affordable. For second year and beyond most people do house shares in new cross or deptford. Or they did when I went. I met my dh at the student union!

Why those universities? Huge numbers offer psychology. What’s the plan after psychology? Must it be London?

I agree with every word of this. My experience of Goldsmith’s is that if you don’t fit in with their very fixed way of so-called individuality then you can easily be excluded.
