Got a student in a private rental (shared house) in one of these cities?

Can you tell me how much they pay for their room, and if that is with or without bills? Shortlisting for UCAS now and I'm having a bit of a wobble about how expensive some of DC2's possible choices are going to be live in!

DC1 is in Cardiff and pays only £85/week without bills. They only get a bit over minimum maintenance loan but all their accommodation and most of their bills are covered by that, at least. First year halls were more expensive but only for 40 weeks so it worked out pretty much the same.

Rent doesn't include bills btw

Motherhubbardscupboard · 30/11/2022 22:06

Bristol rent going up 13% for same house next year to £695, near the uni. And that is a good deal, cheaper than most even 10 or 15 mins walk further away.

FanSpamTastic · 30/11/2022 22:22

Bristol - just signed for next year - £695 no bills.

JWR · 01/12/2022 08:21

£725 pcm including wifi in Edinburgh. Rents have gone up a lot there this year and she has friends doing all sorts of things to get round HMO restrictions and have somewhere to stay. There were students in bunk beds in halls common rooms at the start of the year….

TizerorFizz · 01/12/2022 13:09

@Motherhubbardscupboard
So is £400 paid by pp remotely realistic for Bristol? Seems a huge gap! £400 pm is less then DD paid 8 years ago. And her final year flat was not a palace.

ShaunaTheSheep · 01/12/2022 13:30

Current info for next year (most expensive first)

York
Bristol
Leeds

Motherhubbardscupboard · 01/12/2022 13:32

@TizerorFizz my DD does live near the uni in a decent house, but it's not Clifton or city centre, and no ensuite or anything luxurious, it's a fairly standard student house. She tells me her rent is less than most of her friends, and there is huge competition for houses. She told me this morning there were huge queues outside the lettings agent that released houses today. I think you would have to live a loooong way out to pay £400.

Not realistic at all. Even a dump in Leeds is more than that next year.

Bristol - (Clifton) maisonette for 5 excl. bids - £580 pm (per person).

DorotheaDiamond · 01/12/2022 13:37

Jng1 · 29/11/2022 16:59

Exeter parent. Just signed a tenancy for next year - £155/week not incl bills for a shared 6 bed house. 11 month contract Sept- July.

Currently paying about the same, but in a house with a terrible EPC - all electric storage heaters!

FYI having storage heaters gives you a better epc than electric radiators - ours dropped 10 points when we swapped the crap storage heaters for fabulous efficient radiators

DorotheaDiamond · 01/12/2022 13:39

also Can I ask why students don’t stay in the same house for 2 years? Obv if they have huge falling out with housemates they move but why move otherwise?

TimeforaGandT · 01/12/2022 13:48

£180 per week in York which includes bills

mumsneedwine · 01/12/2022 13:50

@DorotheaDiamond mine have. One for 2 years and one for 3. Makes it so much easier. Few changes in people but only because of changes in circumstances.

Dds friends have stayed in same flat for a second year and she hopes to rejoin them next year. Some move out if friendship groups change or in the case of medics, for example, placements and teaching periods can change requirements.

mumsneedwine · 01/12/2022 13:53

@TizerorFizz you now have to bid for the nicer houses in Bristol. 7 groups went for DDs house and they were chosen by the landlord. Another group tried to get the place by offering more money but landlord stuck with original choice. It's a bit brutal.

SandyIrvine · 01/12/2022 13:55

In some unis like my DDs you can save a bit of money if you are not staying to work as only two terms and landlords keen to rent out flats to festival goers June to August. However many do stay in same flat for more than one year.

ClangingBell · 01/12/2022 13:59

monkey42 · 29/11/2022 14:07

Crikey. York parent here- first year in halls 8k. 2nd year House, not the most pricey, and eye watering 9.5k. We should all become York landlords in our next career move/life. We do wonder how anyone affords it but there must be cheaper non-standard options

York has halls starting at under £4K a year. You’ve chosen some very expensive options!

Blueskythinking123 · 01/12/2022 14:45

Manchester parent signed the guarantor for next year a few weeks ago. For the year the cost is £7375.29. They are staying in the same house as they are in this year. It has gone up by £10 per week according to my DD. July costs £320.66 the other 11 months £641.33. That does include bills.

gogohmm · 01/12/2022 15:00

Bristol is not only expensive, but really hard to secure rentals too. We live there and have had parents posting on Facebook groups begging for spare rooms for their dc to stay in (paid) because there's literally not enough student housing, some students end up living in Newport In wales and commuting! Cardiff is far cheaper, have a dc there

gogohmm · 01/12/2022 15:02

@mumsneedwine

Where is your dc living, we are n Somerset though 20 mins into Bristol. There's quite a few older students living in our area, overseas ones in particular.

ShaunaTheSheep · 01/12/2022 15:05

@ClangingBell under £4k is very rare.
It's a choice between paying a lot more and having either a plush en-suite or catered.

TeeBee · 01/12/2022 15:11

Bristol (Redlands) £630/month not including bills.

Comefromaway · 01/12/2022 15:21

Ds is in Leeds. He will be paying £144 per week including bills next year for 52 weeks.

He could have got a room cheaper but his chosen flatmates wanted to go for the more expensive option. It just means he will have less to spend on other stuff.

mumsneedwine · 01/12/2022 18:17

@gogohmm next year she'll be up the road from Langford. Last 2 years of vet degree are based there. They secured a lovely house in August for next Sept - anything nearby is gone over a year in advance. But it's so much cheaper !!!

TizerorFizz · 01/12/2022 21:18

So how come a pp at 19.14 yesterday says DD is paying £400 “a little way out from Clifton”. It must be adjacent to the motorway, DD paid more than that 8 years ago and it’s surely impossible now. DD was in Clifton though.

I do think having a decent landlord is a big bonus though. In y2 flat the LL had a handyman on site. He was contactable and very helpful. No doubt the rent reflected that but it meant peace of mind.
