Reapplying with same grades?

My DNiece just missed out on a university place last year (got grades Astar A B, she needed AAA). She applied for Economics. Didn't get her insurance either, didn't see anything she fancied in clearing, so is currently on a year out, reapplying now.

She is making exactly the same application as last year, same course, same universities and is confident that this time round she will be accepted straight on to her original firm. How realistic is this? I think she's hoping that having grades in hand and the proposed lowering of grades again this year will work in her favour.

Just hoping to get some expert opinion on this!

That's good to hear! Well done.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 27/04/2023 18:58

That's awesome. I hope she has a fab time at Exeter! (My DD is there and loves it!).

Ellmau · 28/04/2023 08:03

She must be thrilled!

ejbaxa · 28/04/2023 08:06

Well done to her :)

Oblomov23 · 28/04/2023 08:49

I doubt it. Grades/offers are going to be same this year, possibly even higher. Plus economics is very sought after. I'd encourage her to apply to courses who list the grades she's actually got.

Oblomov23 · 28/04/2023 08:50

Seen update. Congratulations.

Very silly for the backup offer to have the same grade requirements than get first choice. It should be somewhere with lower grade requirements. All the guidance when I applied for university very clearly said your back up offer should have lower grade requirements.

Unless hey first choice has lowered their grade requirements this year to what your daughter actually achieved the I would be surprised if they offer her a place to be honest.

Neice!!

And just seen the update and realised this is an old thread. Well done her! (And silly me for replying without reading the whole thread. Doh!)

This thread is gold this morning - wonder how many others will offer "advice" without reading all the comments

Juja · 28/04/2023 13:46

@Jellybebe my DN had a similar challenge @braggingaboutbrasize DN - all her offers were AAA and my DN likewise got A star A B and was rejected by both firm and insurance. She found a place in clearing and is now very happy.

BTW Delighted for your DN - well done for holding your nerve...

This is my concern for DS, who currently has 2 good offers from Exeter (AAA) and Bristol (AAA or A star, A, B with an A in Maths).

On past/current form, he should get an A star in Maths, so my logic says firm Bristol, as their offer spread is less risky than Exeter.

DS however prefers Exeter (campus over city) and is thinking he will firm Exeter and insure Bristol - which makes sense, compared to firming Bristol which would rule Exeter out as an insurance option.

Of course, being an optimistic, confident 18 year old boy, DS translates Bristol's "An offer of accommodation is not guaranteed to insurance entrants" as "they might"; whereas I translate it as "they won't"

Still waiting for Edinburgh to respond, so they may throw a curve-ball into the thinking - although, based on last years responses, it's more likely to be a rejection.

UPDATE: Just in case anyone is interested, she has been offered a place at Exeter this year. Same course, same grades as last year's rejection. So in her case at least, doesn't look as if the year in which she got her grades made any difference

Great result! Hope she enjoys it there.

braggingaboutbrasize · 28/04/2023 14:58

Thanks to all those sending congratulations, she is dead dead chuffed! To those who maybe didn't read the whole thread and have suggested caution, I get it - I also didn't think a university would reject a candidate one year but accept them the next with no change in grades. But I was wrong!

Great news for your DN. I hope she does well there and enjoys it.
