Applying for summer internships

Ds is first year civil engineering and spoke to a lecturer about the possibility of applying for summer internships.
Do you email and literally just ask for an internship? Or what else should you say? Attach a CV?
Any advice welcome, thanks.

Also what use is an internship in say, finance, to someone who actually wants to fo engineering? Not one posting knows much about civil engineering.

Well... I suppose it might give them a broader perspective and either make them think they liked the world of finance or it might put them off it entirely. One of DDs NatSci friends got an internship with an investment bank - she's now doing a (science!) PhD.Grin

Maybe they should reflect on why they enrolled for a hugely expensive engineering course in a shortage subject but didn’t really want it at all? I can see Dc use engineering as a means to an end but the uk needs engineers. The taxpayer subsidises the courses but doesn’t get enough engineers from them. Great if they stay as engineers of course! If they earn a lot and pay lots of tax, so much the better.

Back to the OPs question - as it turned out, dd found hers because they'd posted their openings with her uni. But she did make some speculative inquiries in companies in our area. I think she just did a polite covering letter and attached a brief CV.
Apart from LinkedIn, he may have some luck identifying possibilities if he just Googles for some company names and 'internship' of course.

Oh, I agree. And so would DD and all her friends I know of.
Mind you, having said that, I'm not sure it's at all good for finance, politics etc to be populated only by STE illiterates!

Sorry, OP , we're derailing.

I wouldn’t add “internship” at this stage. Lots of consultancies don’t really do them in the same way bigger ones do. It’s more about work shadowing. So basically Google the firms! Look at their web sites snd get in touch. I wouldn’t just send in a cv either. After 1 year at university it’s a bit thin. What Dc need is a dialogue with a company to get started. This DS is year 1. He knows didly squat! So start small and look at work shadowing.

on my DS’s course they do it for year 2, and then you can be offered a job. It’s done via the Uni

TizerorFizz · 01/11/2022 22:42

Lots of unis never have enough internships to go round. Even a whole year for year in industry courses. It can be challenging.

He needs to be proactive via his university careers service. They will advise on the layout & content of his CV and his cover letter.

But he needs to be very proactive. Internships are pretty competitive.
