Liverpool Hope

Anyone know anything about Liverpool Hope Uni? We went for an Open day today and liked it.
DD is autistic and would prefer/thrive in a smaller environment rather than a larger university.
Any comments good or bad would be welcome.
Or any other suggestions of smaller decent uni's.
Thank you

My DN went there - great until Covid when it was tricky as they were doing a performing subject. A friendly atmosphere from what we heard

It’s a lovely uni and everyone I know who went had a good experience (live locally). Only downsides would be it is a lower tariff uni so might count you out of some of the more competitive grad schemes/careers. It’s not incredibly highly thought of academically because it’s lower tariff (the chant at AU matches against them was always hope for the hopeless, to give you an idea!) It’s also more religious than I could deal with, inclusion of prayer mornings in freshers etc.

But overall I’d recommend. In my current job I support sixth formers and I’ve been impressed with Hopes approach for SEND students.

What does your DD want to study OP?

MeanderingStar · 23/10/2022 14:51

Leeds Trinity? Six miles out of Leeds, compact campus.

houselikeashed · 27/10/2022 16:15

She wants to work with SEN children - but not in a school setting.
she's looking at the SEN with disabilities course.

Has she had a look at edge hill?

houselikeashed · 28/10/2022 22:14

@Bunnyannesummers No. Should we?
We're from the South East, so not stuck on Liverpool - although it was quite nice.
Looking at Chichester next.

My friend went there. He isn't autistic but I suspect is slightly neuro diverse. He loved it. And really found his tribe. I've stayed in their guest accommodation and the campus seems nice. Think my friend is patron or one of the trustees due to his job.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/10/2022 22:19

My friend chose it specifically because it's counts as o e if the 'Catholic universities' although its ecumenical.

houselikeashed · 29/10/2022 00:10

would it matter if you weren't religious at all?

Have you looked at Winchester @houselikeashed ? Really nice, small campus.

Pieceofpurplesky · 29/10/2022 02:02

Other places to look at Edge Hill or Keele?

sashh · 29/10/2022 03:29

Wolverhampton?

Realistically you are looking at es poly places due tot he subject. I was at Wolves in the late 90's early 2000s, now I did have problems with my course but the students doing the Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion Studies or units from that seemed to enjoy their course.

A lot combined it with Deaf studies to learn some BSL.

I think there is a unit on autism as well.

Wolves is quite big but the SEN is taught at the Walsall campus which is small, there is a shuttle bus between campuses.

I did my PGCE at Keele, it might well suit someone with autism as it is a 'bubble', the students refer to it as 'the Keele bubble' as it is just one campus which is huge but sort of in segments, so you never need to leave the campus to go shopping, drinking, play sports whatever but you might need to get a bus.

Obviously it is a 'better' in terms of ranking.

Marjon worth looking at as well. It sounds similar in terms of size & support & has a similar course.

I have experience of a lot of unis & I do think the really small unis offer a different level of support to the students than the larger ones - and that includes from within the student body.

houselikeashed · 29/10/2022 13:15

Thanks all. Some more to look at now.
I'd like to get the best respected course, but it does need to be a small course.

Marjon scores very high in student satisfaction. www.marjon.ac.uk/about-marjon/news-and-events/marjon-news/marjon-students-score-highly-once-again-in-national-survey.html It’s probably worth checking that out for anywhere your dd is interested in - and the actual course as well.
