Warwick - student life?

Hi there,

we're visiting unis atm, ds really liked Warwick, was very impressed by the campus, and liked the modules of the course he intends to study. We liked it overall, but he is (and so am I) a little concerned about social life. He's not a clubber at all, but he likes music and he likes to have fun. He liked University of Sussex for its location and proximity to Brighton. Any experience, insights, tips, opinions on those two? We also visited and liked Nottingham, but he says Warwick and Sussex are on top of his list.
Looking forward to hearing from you! 😊

We might visit Sussex Uni for dd2 actually. Is the campus nice?

Sorry, this was meant as a reply to Darbs76.

I think for my son it’s more he isn’t a big clubber. He’s been out too, but said it was rubbish and came home. He was only 18 a few weeks before we went so is just starting to socialise. He’s very happy there, go and visit. It was last on his list until we went on the open day. We both loved it.

This is good place to see the sorts of things happening www.warwicksu.com/venues-events/events/

My son started in September. He is having an amazing time. Great sport. Quizzes. Films. Drinking/events in the Student Union. Club nights. Meeting loads of new students. Formula student.

I think the trick is to choose accommodation which isn't too expensive but has some social space.

My son said all the best parties are at the cheaper Accomodation. They go over there to party!

Darbs76 · 22/10/2022 18:46

My son isn’t privately educated and none of his new friends appear to be.

Dd said everyone in her halls requested quiet accomodation so it's not a noisy one.

MulberryMoon · 22/10/2022 22:00

Hers is one of the cheaper ones.

Mosik · 22/10/2022 22:08

One of mine went and loved it. First year very much campus based. Very diverse mix of students from all walks of life.
Subsequent years living in Leamington which he loved.
DS grew up in a village though, city kids might view it differently.

losingthemind · 22/10/2022 22:48

DS in hi 1st year, he is having an absolute ball! Loves his course, getting on really well with his flatmates (there is an accommodation questionnaire that you have to complete which aims to match you with like-minded individuals). Has been out to the SU, Leamington, Coventry, and even Birmingham. He just seems so happy.

Hi @MulberryMoon the Sussex campus is lovely, lots of space and right by the Downs so plenty of walks if your DD is so inclined; and an easy journey to Brighton for a more lively vibe.

MulberryMoon · 23/10/2022 10:55

Sounds great?

MulberryMoon · 23/10/2022 10:56

Didn't mean to add a question mark

CornishGem1975 · 23/10/2022 11:04

It's a great location for going out and socialising, yes it's campus based but it's literally minutes from Coventry city centre, 20 mins on the train and you're in Birmingham and Leamington is not far away.

The campus itself is great, the Arts Centre is a fantastic venue and runs great events and shows - we go there a lot ourselves to see comedy.

Saying that, I do know people who have been put off by the high number of international students and the risk of feeling isolated. I don't know if Warwick has a higher number than average of international students?

MulberryMoon · 23/10/2022 11:20

31% International students. Dd not finding it an issue

CornishGem1975 · 23/10/2022 11:44

I don't see it as a bad thing @MulberryMoon just I know some people are not so keen. On the other hand my DD has been complexity put off Exeter after reading about lack of diversity.

MulberryMoon · 23/10/2022 12:01

I was looking at Exeter yesterday for dd2. The journey's a bit long for us. We're nearly 3 hours from warwick which is fine. Obviously a lot quicker by train, but we use coaches as cheaper. I know people do go far and find it fine, but dd1 has quite liked being able to pop back for the weekend. (Once so far, so not excessive

MulberryMoon · 23/10/2022 12:03

Meant to say nearly 3 hours is the coach journey but more on top either side

CornishGem1975 · 23/10/2022 12:07

Yeah, when we went to Cornwall in the summer I said to DD, this journey is a pain in the backside. She's still considering Bath or Bristol though, not as far and easier for a weekend hop home!

MulberryMoon · 23/10/2022 12:08

Bristol is really east by coach for us. We visited twice but dd1 wanted a campus

MulberryMoon · 23/10/2022 12:09

Easy

sakura06 · 23/10/2022 12:12

I had a friend in the mid-2000s who I went to gigs with and he was at Warwick. We regularly went to Birmingham to see bands and the odd gig in Coventry too, so if your son likes music, there should be loads of stuff to do.

Twizbe · 23/10/2022 12:19

I went to Warwick and met DH there. I'm from a small town and went to state school, he's from London and went to public school.

We both lived in Coventry for our second year and third year (well he was on a year abroad in third year but I was in Coventry)

We loved it. First year was quite campus focused but there are so many societies. DH was part of the orchestra in first year and played American football throughout. I wasn't a society of sports person and hung out with my friends more. In Coventry there was loads to do. I had some friends really into music who were often going to gigs in the city.

RampantIvy · 23/10/2022 13:18

It is lovely and feels good, but also a little isolated.

That is the reason why DD wasn't interested in Warwick. We live in a village with not great public transport, and she wanted to be in a city. She isn't a clubber but likes eating out, going to pub quizzes, bottomless brunches etc.

She ended up at Newcastle (which has more privately educated students than Warwick), and loved it so much that she stayed there for work.

gogohmm · 23/10/2022 13:24

I know 4 youngsters who have dropped out from Warwick, mental health support or lack there of rather was the reason, they don't know each other either, very coincidental

Exeter is really weird in its extreme whiteness. We went to an open day and without a word of a lie I only saw a couple of people all day who were not white. It’s a bit freaky.

CornishGem1975 · 23/10/2022 20:44

Yeah I've heard that @Era and that's why DD was a bit turned off by it. She has a mixed and diverse group of friends, she wasn't keen at all. Plus I've heard that it's not just the obvious lack of diversity, but also that people have found it not very welcoming at all to those who aren't white.
