Tick defer box or ask after results?

Hello,
That's it really. Ds pretty sure he wants to defer and look for a job over the year.
Would it be frowned upon to not tick defer box on the form and try and defer after results? What do most candidates do?
Thanks.

We saved a lot of stress by waiting to apply until after ds had his results!

Totally understand that approach!

DD emailed her top 2 choices after she had offers last year, and both were happy to defer. Of course, she has now changed her mind aboit what to study, so needs to work out how to withdraw and reapply.

My ds ticked the defer box - he knew he wanted to travel and it made for a very stress free year as Uni was all sorted.

My dd ticked defer as she was sure. She had some FOMO when everyone else left and she felt like she'd been left behind but that was only about a month or so.

Both mine clicked the defer box and have been delighted to have that year's break- youngest currently much enjoying working in France as an au pair.

Some Unis will be happy to defer the place others less so - also depends on the subject. Worth looking at what they say or emailing admissions tutors.

If you tick defer box, do you get offers same time as everyone else?
Obviously, ds needs to be sure before doing that.
He feels a year out is a good idea and he can put some money by as planning to work.

Former Russell Group admissions tutor here. If applying to my School, you could def tick the Defer box and get the same offer as everyone else, provided we were convinced you had a plan for keeping up your Maths. (We are in STEM and there is always a worry that those on a gap year will lose their Maths.)I cannot think of a single advantage to postponing the decision to defer.

If you asked us later whether you could defer we would consider your request. But if the standard offer were increasing and you had not achieved the new one, we would probably not agree to it.

Thanks, poetryandwine I will try and get him to make a firm decision.

My DD had 5 offers from RG’s she contacted all and asked if they would let her defer they all said yes.

Her boyfriend had offers from Cambridge and 4 RG’ again they all agreed to him defer.

Thanks.
He does need to be sure before pressing the defer box...

Going to put in application and defer.
Unexpectedly blown away by a university [Surrey] the other day but has to put 5 down and we shall see what happens!
Always has the option to apply again after results if changes his mind or things don't work out, etc...
