Sheffield Hallam is it competitive

My DD has just been on the open day and has her heart set on going.

Her chosen course is a small intake, not a niche subject, she can study it everywhere but not necessarily her area of interest.

She is predicted the grades required. Thank you.

I think it would depend on the course, but generally I would expect it to not be overly competitive.

I recommended this on another thread, but if you put in Sheffield Hallam and the course she is looking at you can see the range of grades they generally accept. From there you could see roughly how low the grades drop in clearing to work out if lots apply. You could also just email and ask them, I did with DS last year and they were very helpful.

Thank you, she has been predicted similar grades to the requirement and she can possibly push herself further than the BBC needed.

I think she’d be gutted if she didn’t get in, she’s looking as well at Liverpool John Moores and Newcastle as well.

We were at the same open day today and one of the subject talk leads told us that a lot of their courses end up with clearing places and they lower the grades at this point also. This meant that some that has been offered a foundation degree initially ended up on the 3 year degree instead. Good luck to your daughter!

Nat6999 · 15/10/2022 23:56

Ds best friend has just started her degree there, she got 4 A* in her A levels, she is doing product design.

RampantIvy · 16/10/2022 08:31

In general, no, but it may be course dependent.

No!

Thank you for your input, they didn’t mention it at our subject talk, I’m hoping for DD she gets an offer, she’s set on SHU. She wasn’t bothered by the football fans etc she loves football and will probably end up at Bramhall Lane.

what were your thoughts?

My dd and I went to Sheffield Hallam at the weekend, it was really impressive and she wants to go - is considering commuting from home.

@gegs73 posted that link in response to a question I had, it was really helpful and reassured me and dd that even if she doesn’t get the grades required it’s not an automatic no.

Lilacsunflowers · 17/10/2022 16:57

When you say the Uni is 'impressive' - in what way? Because according to global rankings it doesn't exactly do that well Confused

QuebecBagnet · 17/10/2022 17:06

Very much depends on the course. I used to lecture there and we could have filled our course 10x over every year. Never went into clearing or dropped offers

Teachermum12345 · 17/10/2022 17:49

We liked it, the lecturers were lovely and the courses looked good. We have a daughter at the University of Sheffield and really like the city. We’re going to go to as many as possible I think and then go from there.

Individuals can be “impressed” at an open day regardless of global rankings of the university.

Perhaps the lecturers they spoke to, current students who were there, modules on offer, facilities, the campus were impressive?

Thanks @QuebecBagnet you described why I was impressed very well!

The lecturers we heard were enthusiastic, the course sounded very interesting and the student ambassadors we met, particularly the ones who are doing the course that dd is interested in were really helpful and encouraging.

I’m not particularly interested in global rankings to be honest.

A lot of so called ‘impressive’ universities are very much dependent on what suits the individual. I, for example, know people who dropped out of Exeter because their course was mostly online and the city was boring. There are lots of reports of universities like Manchester and Bristol for example this year not having enough student halls or even private accommodation for all their first year students. Definitely not impressive to me. Different universities suit different people. Not everyone gets all A/A* and universities like Sheffield Hallam definitely do suit many people. It’s in a great city, plentiful comparatively cheap accommodation and some really good courses. Pretty impressive 🤷‍♀️ No, it’s not St Andrews but that is not going to suit everyone.

Yoloohno · 17/10/2022 22:34

It’s impressive that suits my dd who is from a working class background and will be the first one to university in both our families.

She works hard but won’t get Russell group grades, she loved the city from the moment we arrived. It’s affordable for her and us to give her a nice student life.

One of the lecturers we spoke to is still studying there and is a graduate. The course suits her interests and Sheffield came across as a friendly, sociable city.
