Degree in Radiography?

Just wondered if anyone on here had done a degree as a mature student in Radiography or any other science of health based degree and the route they took. Interested in anything anyone can tell me please. I know I can do the A Level route or an access course but I have kids so it a bit difficult. Also job prospects afterwards. Thanks for any information.

My dniece has one. She went to Leeds University, but she didn't do it as a mature student. I'm sure that they take mature studnets on the courses

A woman on my access course did it, she is a mature student. She manages well as far as I am aware. You can do an access course part time over two years, I did it that way and it fitted in really well around my family.
Where abouts in the uk are you?

London. I know they do an Access to Health and Science at my local college, after which I could go on to a Radiography degree but I didnt realise it could be done part time that would be fab for me.

Hi,
I'm in my third year of a Radiography degree and I'm 37 with 2 young kids AND a husband! Yes, it is very hard work but well worth it in the end. I have 3 months to go, and when I look back to nearly 5 years ago when I started its gone really fast. I went down the Access part time route and it worked really well for me. Go for it!

Thanks kiwik8. Havent looked at this thread for a few weeks so didnt see your response. Thats brilliant. I feel quite inspired now. Do you mind if I ask where you are studying? Did you struggle much with childcare? My kids are still pretty young, though one is at full time school and I wasnt planning to begin until my other was in nursery. Any tips would be gratefully recieved.

Hi Kiwik8

Any info you can give regarding radiography as a career would be gratefully received.

Were you able to work at a hospital local to you due to childcare commitments?

Thanks

radiography has two clinical branches
diagnostic and therapeutic

society of radiographers SCoR home page"

radiography careers

tbh it is difficult times in NHS at mo. i know nurses SALT and physio grads are all struggling to find jobs

Visit Depts if you can to talk to staff
open days at colleges
visit uni depts meet staff ask about courses
what do you like doing, what about each prospective job appeals would you enjoy

Hi Scottishmummy

Thanks for the info. I've been to an open day at a university and been told that I have the relevant qualifications etc to do the course.

However have been speaking to people and they all seem to think that radiography would be a very boring job so wanted to find out what the MNers think.

I'd like to do diagnostic. It would be a complete career switch for me ...

with all due respect it doesnt matter what anyone thinks- what do you think!you cant chose your potential career based on that basis

consider your aptitudes interests
what does being radiographer involve
would you like it about it

all jobs have their funky exciting wow factor, and then the actually reality of doing it

eg Architecture yes the big wow of designing a building, but also the job of detailing choosing which floor tiles, specifying which manufacturer, which adhesive

law isn't all case work there is the thorough research and information collation

Hi

I have managed to arrange to shadow a radiographer for a day so that may help me with my decision..but would be really great if any radiographers could give me some insight into their work.
