Will A level grades going back to normal increase the number of Uni places?

My DS is applying to read economics, which has got really competitive in the past few years, exacerbated by grade inflation. Is it possible that selective unis will give more offers this year since the number of top grades will be cut so more students will miss their offer? Or is this wishful thinking.

Why would they make more offers, they will know that a certain percentage of offer will be met/accepted so well offer accordingly.

@DeeofDenmark
I thought that a fewer percentage of students will meet their offer this year than the past few years since they are lowering the percentage of students getting each grade, so Unis will offer more places as more people will miss the offer. Have I misunderstood this?

A lot of Unis have raised their grade boundaries for next year. My DD went to Uni this year and I have a DS applying for next year so have kept a close eye on them. I doubt they would over offer in case they ended up with the same fiasco last year where there were not enough places for students then loads of deferrals had a knock on effect to this years cohort so fewer places not to mention the debacle with some Unis not having enough accommodation.

I think it is easier to fill excess places in clearing rather than risking too many students making their offer.

I have a DS also applying for economics and do not know what to expect. But I think the unis will offer less places in the first instance because go they have been caught too many times, because of the stretch situation with Accommodation and I have seen a few who have actually raised their entry requirements for 2023 entry compared to 2022 entry.

we are aiming for the likes of Bristol, Bath, Nottingham, Leeds and I think for these, you almost need AAA* to have a chance of receiving an offer. Very stressful
but if anyone had any info on this I am a taker ! Thanks

I have a dd at Bristol studying economics
Bristol ask for A*AA to study straight economics. I think that the contextual offer is AAB which is still very high

I can’t see these grades being lowered tbh.
