Durham and Lancaster

Hi

i know we need to visit and we will but Lancaster is a very long way from home!

DD is applying to Durham for Sociology- been to the open day and stayed overnight in Durham and she loves everything about it (which came as a surprise as she’d been not that keen till we visited).

Shed always thought that York would be her preferred Uni but Durham now trumps that. She’s also been looking at Lancaster- highly ranked for sociology and it seems to have a heavy research focus (one of the things she likes about Durham). Also there is a lot more focus on the areas of sociology she’s particularly into compared to York (Durham also focus’ on her interests heavily).

so my question is does anyone have any recent experience of Lancaster for Sociology and as a city how does it compare to Durham?

I know a lot of this is subjective but would appreciate any opinions.

Neither does ours NotDonna - dd is possibly a bit of an oddity applying to do Sociology with Biology, Chemistry and Psychology.

Thank you Piggy that’s really good to know. One of the things dd liked about Durham was the incorporation of Policy into the course. She’s been undecided as to whether to apply for straight sociology or sociology and policy at Birmingham. York sadly seem to keep Sociology and Social Policy very separate.

Has she seen the SPS course at York?

KittyMcKitty · 12/10/2022 20:05

She’s not looked it properly and it may be a good option

My son is at Lancaster (not doing sociology). He only put it in his top five to make up the numbers and thought he was set on York. However after offer holder days nowhere else came close for him. It is a very impressive campus, the flexibility of the courses in the first year with the major and minors is fantastic, we found the lecturers very engaged and welcoming, and the accommodation is well priced and plentiful. The only downsides are the town itself which feels a bit run down, the weather and the west coast mainline. I think if the Eden project north goes ahead and the new cyber security centre or whatever it is, then Lancaster could be well on the up

thetab.com/uk/durham/2022/10/18/durham-students-left-to-sleep-on-the-streets-overnight-to-sign-houses-during-housing-crisis-50893 Saw this this morning and thought it was a bit concerning. As much as I love Durham, I wouldnt want to be queueing up for a house

@ScoobyDoobyDoowhere
Are you always so rude about other people? I hate the idea that parents, who should know better, spread division amongst students. Few parents would ever pay double. Why do you use names to label people? Should I describe you as a Waynetta? Just don’t be so anti everyone who isn’t in your image. Some people earn more. They pay tax. Probably lots of it. They might be doctors or people who employ hundreds. People are different. I’m hoping your DC is a nicer person than you. And no, my DD isn’t Ophelia!

@ScoobyDoobyDoowhere Unfortunately its the rental market and students want to get the best accommodation first and thus creates a mass hysteria and people queue up. So when they all get released at once everyone queues to get the best. Ideally they should release them as and when they come onto the market or perhaps have a digital waiting list for each property might be better as it saves queueing in the early hours. Durham is a good uni though, so can see why students want to go there :)

No@TizerorFizz apologies for any offence caused and thank you for your insult.

For the record our children only receive the minimum Maintenance Loan like many others and we do earn, pay our taxes and financially and emotionally support our children through University.

But we like many others will be squeezed enough with have our household bill increases and then we will be further squeezed supporting and subsidising our two children at Uni who will both be paying extortionate rent and utility bills.

I live in Lancaster and I used to work at Lancaster uni (not ok that course though!).
Any specific questions?

QuebecBagnet · 20/10/2022 06:58

@Piggywaspushed those feminist webinars sounds good, can you say where I could find them please.

If anyone else is considering Durham Sociology Kimberley Jamie spoke at the open day and she was amazing!
