Daughter wishes to go to university this year

Daughter (19) has decided she wants to go to university this year.
She has found a private university that will take her. Will any of the main institutions consider an application at this late stage?

A "blended learning organisation" is likely to be mainly a scam for fleecing fees from you as quickly as possible. Only go with a reputable actual (non private) university. Private universities are not like private schools, you don't get a better quality. They are unregulated and may not offer good value for money.

Criminology and Psychology courses are always massively oversubscribed. No good quality course will have any places left now.

Ignore this. They are as well regulated (far too bloody regulated....) as non-private ones as long as they are OfS registered (which Arden is). Quality-wise they're variable, but then so are non-private unis.

Greenwich website says still they have clearing spaces for criminology and criminal justice

Dannexe · 26/09/2022 11:49

Plus their criminology and criminal psychology extended course (which has a foundation year)

Dannexe · 26/09/2022 11:54

Kingston also has criminology in clearing

I feel a need to speak up for Buckingham.

Not for everyone. However they are legit. They seem to be more like a US private college. A friend's child went. A complicated back story including a late diagnosis of a difficult medical condition which effectively wrecked their school career and led to an amount of self medication via illegal substances, dropping out of University, living in a squats, intervention, rehab then Buckingham. It was not clear sailing but Buckingham were willing to work with the parents and provide a level of pastoral support not common at University. They got their degree and indeed a postgraduate qualification.

This case is probably atypical and I assume there is also a number of very motivated overseas students (given oversea student fees are so high, Buckingham, with its compressed courses, may be a cheaper alternative) and offers a private, but recognised, medical degree. It seems to score highly on student satisfaction. So again, not for everyone - it is expensive, but for some it will be an option worth considering.

What is her motivation for university? Does she want the full living away experience or is it just about furthering her career?

If the latter and she has a job and home with you the Open University is well worth considering. Lot of January start dates to give her time to prepare a bit better

CountryClaire · 26/09/2022 12:46

@Calmdown14
She has had a year off post covid effecting her exams and illness.
She is academically able (previous scholar) but suffered an incident in school. I don't want to elaborate as I asked for help on MN regarding her issues in the past, it could identify her and me. She is well and now feels she is missing out. All her friends are now back at uni or starting this year.
She studied law at A level in addition to another subject so will have to do a foundation year.

We know Buckingham and she could drive there from home (her brother lived at home for uni).

@Needmoresleep
That is good to know regarding support and sen help. She has been unwell but is doing great now.

Could she do a foundation course locally. Some FE colleges offer HE courses. Might be a good stepping stone and start applying for uni next year.

I’m going to Goldsmiths and it looks like they’re still taking applications through clearing. Lectures don’t start until next week 🤞👍

HilarityEnsues · 26/09/2022 18:00

Buckingham do great integrated English Language and subject degrees and Masters for overseas students, I also know a UK student who loved it there. It's not similar to, say, RG unis but it's small, friendly and seems to nurture the students, their student satisfaction is high.

My dd just started at Greenwich doing criminal psychology, loves it

141mum · 26/09/2022 18:05

Also my dd had a year out due to health and the university have been great, she’s also 19

Thank you. She is interested in London, Birmingham, Reading, Oxford Brookes. We have family in all those locations. Criminology and Psychology.

They will most likely all have places on some courses and universities will still be taking students as they operate as businesses and so the more people they get - the more money they get but it's whether they have places on the courses that are of interest I guess but I'd get phoning the admissions teams tomorrow and ask them as the longer you leave it the harder it will be for her to catch up.

Hopefully 🙏 she'll get something

CountryClaire · 27/09/2022 16:23

Thank you all. We have managed to get two close to home and two potentials.
The foundation year was needed and that cut down the options. Fingers crossed now or she can start in January at Buckingham.
