NCTJ Accreditation where to study

Where would one get information on where to study for this course and how would you go about it. I am asking on behalf of my son who has just graduated with a BA in journalism and creative writing, but the course did not offer this accreditation. It's confusing to find out how to get this accreditation from googling if you already have a degree. I am asking covertly just for my own information. Wink

There's a list here
Interested to see Highbury College in Portsmouth at the top of the list where I trained many moons ago after my own degree. Funnily enough DH and I were reminiscing about NCTJ courses only yesterday - they are very practical, teaching skills such as 100 wpm shorthand and media law and good ones will have links to the industry with help finding placements and jobs. It's years since I trained, but back in the day you would have been expected to show evidence of work experience rather than academic knowledge of the media industry.

Thanks Lillian, as he is London based I looked at the News Associates training which would give a NCTJ Level 5 Diploma in multi-media journalism, I suppose that it the modern equivalent do you suppose, it's really confusing as the other courses are BA Hons and he already completed a BA.

I agree he doesn't need another BA. I see Brunel also does an NCTJ post grad if he wants to be in London.

thanks do you think this www.nctj.com/qualifications-courses/qualifications/diploma-in-journalism/ is the same course? sorry it's so confusing

That looks like a good course with some flexibility to accommodate specialist interests. The key thing is to look at where graduates go on to work afterwards and what percentage get jobs - a good course should have lots of contacts in the industry so students can go on to get work or a traineeship (not just unpaid internships).

Thanks Lillian appreciated.

What about Masters courses at Salford. Based at Media City they must be of interest. Not sure about accreditation but their grads get jobs!

As far as I understand it, any of the accredited courses listed there (if you look at the filters you can see that some are fast track, some are undergrad, some are postgrad, etc) will contain the same NCTJ modules. The academic ones will then have more content.

My dd did an accredited MA at LJMU, and at the same time her friend was doing the fast track course at News Associates Manchester. The NCTJ requirements are the same (I think there are mandatory modules such as law and shorthand, and optional ones), plus dd did an extra module or two, work experience, and a masters project. The News Associates course is 28 weeks, the masters was a full year.

They both came out with good shorthand, NCTJ accreditation, and jobs.

I think you can get a loan to finance the fast track courses in a similar way to the postgrad options

Thanks all, really helpful.
