Didn't know this thread was still active. Those of you who have dc who did a yr placement, do you refer to them as 2022 cohort of 2023? I'm thinking it'll be 2023 but it's a bit confusing as people think my DS entered in 2020. Just wondered.

DS just handed in his dissertation 4yrs has finally come to an end.

@Simbobs well done to your ds. Great news!

I'm also shocked that getting onto a Master's degree is proving so hard. I thought so long as you had a decent degree you were in.

simbobs · 22/05/2023 22:27

@Shimy i think of them as the 2019 cohort, ie the year when they started. That way those who did a 3 or 4 year degree are all included.

Ragwort · 22/05/2023 23:05

So pleased to find you ... I looked the other for the thread as I wanted a rant, in my DS's final exam there was an error (mathematical) which meant all the students were very worried and concerned ... and it obviously had an adverse effect on timings and how they answered other questions. There was a grovelling apology afterwards and students were told that 'it will be factored into the marking' but really shocking, surely these sorts of things would be double checked 😡 I felt so disappointed for my DS but tried to boost him up by saying everyone will be in the same position etc etc.
Anyway, he hasn't mentioned it again and is enjoying the last few weeks with his mates in his Uni city. He's got casual work lined up for the summer and then focusing (I hope!) on his graduate career.
So lovely to hear how everyone is getting in, I have so appreciated the support of this thread for the last four years.

Shimy · 22/05/2023 23:16

@Ragwort I hadn't thought of it that way round and it makes perfect sense now I think of it. On ds's graduation hoodie though is says 'class of 2023' so i guess different institutions also choose different ways to label them.

I'm going to have to read this thread back a few pages to catch up on how everyone i.e our recent graduates are getting on. It's amazing to think this thread has been running for so long. I still remember the morning we got the A'level results.

icanbewhatiwant · 23/05/2023 06:39

@bigTillyMint Ds is in Oamaru. He thinks he's going to head to Nelson next. He says he might find work there.

RampantIvy · 23/05/2023 06:56

I'm also shocked that getting onto a Master's degree is proving so hard. I thought so long as you had a decent degree you were in.

DD worked at a 2.1/first all the way through university. Her overall classification at the end of each year were firsts, so her transcript is very good. It was a very competitive masters, almost as competitive as medicine - apparently only 20% of applicants get a place (25% of those who get through to the interview stage).

I'm surprised she was rejected because I would have thought that working in a pharmacy and dealing with patients every day would go a long way towards making her an attractive prospect.

bigTillyMint · 23/05/2023 07:06

@icanbewhatiwant, Nelson is a lovely place and many more opportunities for jobs there!

@RampantIvy good luck to your DD for à reapplication - I’m sure she’ll get there in the end.

simbobs · 23/05/2023 07:13

I have also really appreciated the support of this thread, and there have been a few times where it has made me aware of impending deadlines or issues about which DS was blissfully unaware!

@RampantIvy that seems very hard on your DD, and not a little puzzling. What on earth more are they looking for?

@icanbewhatiwant well done to your DS for hanging in there. Hopefully something will turn up.

RampantIvy · 23/05/2023 08:00

I have no idea @simbobs. I suggested that she asks for some feedback.

Shimy · 23/05/2023 15:26

@RampantIvy That is very odd and disappointing. Is this Oxbridge? what subject is it?

RampantIvy · 23/05/2023 15:28

Newcastle - physician associate. 25 places for 100 people interviewed. I don't know how many didn't even get an interview. DD is alumni so they can access her transcript.

Shimy · 23/05/2023 15:32

oooh! sounds very over subscribed. What a shame though what with being an alumni as well! there must've been loads from her year that applied. I'm sure she will get something from elsewhere with her qualifications just not at Newcastle. Is she waiting to hear from other places?

RampantIvy · 23/05/2023 15:37

She wanted to stay in Newcastle so she didn't apply elsewhere. There are several posts on TSR from disgruntled applicants who were rejected. She is disappointed rather than upset. There will be other opportunities though.

Shimy · 23/05/2023 15:45

There definitely will be other opportunities and well done her for maintaining a high standard throughout and graduating. Her work ethic will open doors.

RampantIvy · 23/05/2023 15:47

Thank you @Shimy

blametheparents · 23/05/2023 18:57

How lovely to hear everyone's news :-)

@RampantIvy - I completely agree with @Shimy that, in the end, her work ethic will open doors for your DD. This is just a pause while she works out another path.

@simbobs - So pleased to hear that DS is getting on better - and good luck for those interviews!

@icanbewhatiwant - So jealous of your DS in NZ (well, not the sheep farm bit, but all the rest!)

DS is now 9 months into his graduate job, and has taken three exams so far (accountancy). Luckily, passed them all! Just loads more to go! It's actually been lovely having him at home, and he's been saving hard. He'd like to move in with his girlfriend, but rents are just so expensive and he def can't afford to buy anywhere on his current salary. I'm sure they'll work it out.

Just DD to get through A levels now! First paper was today. DS did IB, and there is something to be said for the way they compress the exams into a shorter window. Bizarrely that felt less stressful than all this hanging aound with large gaps between exams.

simbobs · 24/05/2023 18:55

Three interviews 3 job offers!! He has accepted the one that he really wants even though it is slightly less money than the others. He might even start next week. He hasn't even had his degree conferred yet! I'm so pleased (had to get one of them off the payroll). Sorry, just had to share.

RampantIvy · 24/05/2023 19:15

Brilliant. Well done to your DS @simbobs

chocolatenutcase · 24/05/2023 19:23

Brilliant news @simbobs

bigTillyMint · 24/05/2023 19:46

Fantastic @simbobs! That’s great news after all your previous worries

Ragwort · 24/05/2023 19:50

Congratulations to your DS simbobs that's fantastic news.

Shimy · 24/05/2023 21:59

Whoop! @simbobs Congratulations and well done to him. What a relief and yes one less on the payroll! of course you should share, it will encourage those still looking that there are opportunities out there otherwise everything seems a bit bleak.

MargaretThursday · 24/05/2023 22:09

@simbobs
Well done! Brilliant news!

simbobs · 24/05/2023 23:19

Thanks everyone. The key seems to be to find a good recruitment agency specialising in the field in which they are interested. I think he has done incredibly well, but as with everything in his life it just kind of happened. Now to actually graduate...

Notagardener · 25/05/2023 02:35

Had to try and think when dc1 started...
He did some volunteering abroad but has now started his first proper graduate job. So far so good.
