Durham Open Day- Rail strikes & parking

We were thinking of going up to the Durham open day but it seems there are rail strikes planned for the day.

Has anyone been before, how crazy is the parking - I assume it'll be even worse with no trains, so if it was bad before we might skip this one.

Thanks!

There is a fair bit of street parking and some multistory and also decent park and ride.

Park & Ride at Durham is good :-)

We park at the Howland or Hoyland park and ride (parking spaces were plentiful) and it was an easy 10 min or so walk down to the meeting point at last years open day. We caught the bus back after lunch in the centre. I would advise trainers or very comfy footwear as lots of walking in Durham especially if you visit some buildings up fairly steep hills as we did. Durham City Centre is lovely.

However, if you chose Durham please be open minded about College choices and don’t chose Durham if you only like two or three Colleges and would be disappointed if you were allocated elsewhere (see this years threads on TSR The Student Room) nothing is guaranteed and many students are still waiting to find out whether or not they have been reallocated and to find out confirmation of their College for Sept 2022 and they still don’t know the moving in date and time etc even now and they are meant to start and move into their Colleges in just two weeks time!!!

Thank you all.

Interesting Wordlewobble - she was interested in St Mary's as apparently they have a female only wing, I don't think she'd be as keen if it were mixed accommodation.

Oops sorry name change fail there!

We were coming from the south and parked in the Howlands Park n Ride which is adjacent to the self catering colleges. A short walk past some of the other colleges to the science blocks and library. We then walked down into the city centre to have lunch & see the old colleges. Took a bus back up.

On the mixed sex accommodation ask at every college you go to. DS starts this September and the only question asked was do you have a preference over sharing with others who drink alcohol. Another student starting this year was asked do you want a single or mixed sex flat, both self-catering.
