Edinburgh accommodation panic!

My son is going into his 3rd year (he’s at uni in Scotland), term starts on the 21st sept but he cannot find anywhere to live and is now starting to panic (as am I!) he was looking with 2 friends but got nowhere, 1 has dropped out to look on her own so he’s now looking for a 2 bed but despite applying to everything they can, they’ve simply got nowhere as it’s so competitive. I’m not after advice as to where to look, they’ve registered with everyone they can including on social media, all private run student halls are full, I just want to have an anonymous worry/moan. He’s had a really tough time with covid, he hasn’t made many friend although he loves being at uni and his course, it just feels like another kick in the balls for his uni experience as everything was so restricted for the first 18 months…..

Sorry for the moan, I’m just gutted for him….but trying to keep positive around him to keep him going. Fingers crossed that something will just pop up for them.

Get him to post on the Morningside Edinburgh page on Facebook that's where most people post

Tretchikoff · 03/09/2022 20:57

Try Gumtree

Downsize2021 · 03/09/2022 21:00

Meadows chat on fb often have single rooms advertised.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 03/09/2022 21:02

Spareroom.co.uk is good.

Invisimamma · 03/09/2022 21:06

Is he at Edinburgh University? George Square or Kings buildings? The Advice Place, is good for helping with accomodation. They used to have an online kind of notice board where flat shares and rooms were advertised but unsure if it still exists.

Also try Gum tree, at this stage you'll be better looking for a single room in a shared flat, chances of him being able to rent a property himself at this late stage will be slim.

We know a few who have got places back in halls in third year.

Cleopatra67 · 03/09/2022 21:14

I think this year has been unprecedented in terms of demand. My son is redoing his third year at Kings and has been looking for two months, He’s been on Spare room, estate agents and the Uni accommodation people. He had no problems finding accommodation in his previous two years. Prices are bonkers and people are paying deposits in cash or paying for 6 months up front. Today he was really lucky to get a room in Uni halls in Stratford. It’s 11 k for 50 weeks. Absolute bloody madness. Hope your son finds something soon,

There were some spaces in halls for returners on Wednesday (New Arthur Place and ?Riego).

Accommodation in Edinburgh is so hard to come by. Airbnb means landlords are letting ‘per night’ any nice flat.

Monthly let's are often not that great. One of my DC’s is in a flat of 6, paying £600 a month each. It is in awful condition. No living room - it is a bedroom and just a smallish kitchen with a two seater sofa.
They really struggled to find something too, often being told they were ‘number 35/48/52 on the list to see flats.

However, saying that, by taking one room with others already in a flat, especially older students, my DC became the longest serving tenant and as his fellow renters moved on, was able to move his friends in the following year.

SandyIrvine · 03/09/2022 21:26

Spoke to DD who has a halls job. She says New Arthur Place is full but there were spaces in Reigo yesterday for returners. No full flats but if you are in a group they will try and put you together.

And people want to stop private landlords - here's a prime example why they are needed!

LIZS · 03/09/2022 21:44

The council are looking at restricting airbnbs as it prices local people and students out of the city. There may still be places in private halls too but they are over £200pw.

Hi Op, I sent you a pm.

This is happening everywhere - young people are being terribly ripped off. My dd had a similar problem in Bristol. She is 23, in work but no longer a student and agents wanted proof of £30k earnings (!) and on one occasion 12 months rent up front. Both impossible.
I think this is part to do with airbnb. We went to a funeral in Bristol last week and stayed in a flat in an airbnb - pretty much every flat in that block was airbnb so that was a huge resource denied to local people.

Mondaytosunday – not sure why this demonstrates private landlords are needed. Surely the houses won’t disappear if they’re not owned by private landlords. Might be better council owned so rents are fair and the properties aren't let out as short time lets.
