Computer Science degree at UWE or 6 month coding bootcamp?

Having no affordable accommodation at UWE, my ds is now considering whether a six month bootcamp might offer a better chance at getting a good career start. Bootcamp would save a ton of money in loans and he could keep focused for a short intensive period (which suits his personality). But what would he be losing by not doing the degree? Thoughts and tips please !

I would do the boot camp to see if he likes it, get a job and then they might pay him to do a degree if he needs one .

He should look into Apprenticeships offerings such as this one (bu I am sure there are others too) makers.tech/become/apprentice/
apply.makers.tech/identitytech
He will get paid during that training and pass some tests and exams to obtain qualifications.
He would need to show that he has aptitude for coding so if he is considering it now is the right time for hime to start learning. He doesn't need to pay for v.expensive bootcamps.

True. There was a really good thread recently with a mn giving advice on free courses to try first.

Thanks for this. He has applied for it this evening.

How did he get on with the bootcamp out of interest? We run one based in Norwich and always interested to hear peoples experiences. Was this a funded space or did you have topay?

We spoke to somebody with a job of high responsibility (also responsible for recruitment) in a large UK company and he strongly advised us to go for the computer science degree, so my DS has started his course at UWE (and we're helping out with the astronomical accommodation costs). He's enjoying it so far.

Very interesting.

Yes CompSci degrees for sure have their place, as with everything in the university arena, there are compsci degrees focussed on actual coding alongside the science and there are research based ones.

The main thing is if DS is enjoying it. If that's the case, then all is good!

Uni can be postponed for a year, boot camp more intense and better analysis of what's what so to speak. @yasnayapolyana

Agree. In his case he'd already taken his year out...and managed to do a bit of growing up in the process.
