Can you help with budgeting? After room costs how much do they need to live - food, Uni stuff, washing etc? £75? No idea how to help them plan this.

There is so much info on budgets on MN and on the WIWIKAU Facebook page.

Depends on your child and their social life.

My daughter could live on £80. Tea total non-drinker.

My son not. We ended up around £100 a week for him.

In 2000 my parents helped me out with £45 a week after rent but before phone contract. I could manage on that. I think in today's terms that's easily £100.

We are giving our DC £1100 a month
rent is £600 leaving them £125 a week
We pay phones ,essential clothing and do a big shop once a term

I've seen a lot of posts recently asking this and it really depends how much maintenance loan they are receiving, where they will be living, if they will have a term time or holiday job (which may limit spending opportunities), if they are a party animal, if you expect them to pay for travel,, phones etc, whereabouts in the country they will be based....

Of course, a key factor is how much you can afford to give them. Some families where their DC receive the maximum maintenance loan and bursaries still feel they should be trying to top them up, when their DC are possibly already receiving far more than their flatmates.

Mine don’t take out the maintenance loans (Scotland)

@PhoneyM I bookmarked a good thread about this last year so I could refer back to it. Here it is: www.mumsnet.com/talk/higher_education/4320679-How-much-money-to-give-DD-a-month-at-University
