GCSE remark

Has anyone ever had a grade go down after having a paper remarked?

DD was one mark off a grade 7 in combined science and school have said we should get it reviewed/remarked to see if they can find an extra mark.

DD (via the medium of TikTok) has decided there's a chance she could lose marks and end up with a grade 5.

She'd have to lose 17 marks for this to happen.

Has anyone ever experienced this?

Once, yes. There's a tiny chance. Especially in science because it's far less subjectively marked than, say English lit.

There are 6 papers for GCSE combined Science. You need more information from the school about which paper needs to be reviewed.
It's not really a remark, it's a review of marking. Other threads explain this process.

If it is only one mark, then presumably the chance that a review will discover an over-marking by enough to take her down to the grade below is fairly slim? You do need to know which paper to request the review of, though.

17 marks would be a scandal ! It would mean the examiner isn't up to the job and probably all their papers should be re- called.
I would go for it. We are getting some re- marked as missed next grade by 1 or 2 marks. Good luck

There is less chance of a grade going up when it is one mark because on review it would seem that the examiner's judgment is correct. Movement usually occurs when there are a greater number of marks because then it is easier to see whether an examiner has made a misjudgement

GCSE papers cannot be remarked, they can have a review of marking. With the childs consent the school an order an e-copy of the papers (not free on some boards) to see if it is worth paying for a review of marking of any of the papers or a clerical recheck.

They don’t do remarks. They review the marking. A senior examiner looks at the paper and considers whether the marks are reasonable for that piece of work. Changes are only made if there is an administrative error (for example, the mark is allocated to the wrong question) or if there is an unreasonable exercise of academic judgement (for example, the original examiner did not credit a point that was creditable in the mark scheme).

I think it's fairly unusual for grades to go down by much. If they're only one mark off the next grade up, they'd need to fall by around 8 marks to the next grade down. Maybe pay for the exam script and ask the head of dept to advise.

I had DDs maths papers remarked as she was 1 mark off an 8. Had to pay for all 3 papers and then she did get 1 extra mark and the fee for that paper was refunded.
Also had chemistry remarked and she lost 5 marks, she was 3 marks off a 9 but she didn’t slip down a grade. It was quite a lot of marks between 8 and 9 grade boundaries.
