Now results day has gone and most know where they are going I thought I would be nice to have a planning thread on what to take to university.

Argos do a basic starter set which looks good value. Starter kitchen set

Then IKEA for some bakewear, duvet and pillows and duvet sets.

I was joking about giving her the old towels but will probably give her some new ones.

Vacuum storage bags to make transport easier. Vacuum bags

Then a rice cooker (we have one at home so I know she will use it a lot and you can cook a lot more than just rice). Mini rice cooker

What is on your list?

Absolutely nothing.

DS3 proudly announced that all his clothes fit into an IKEA storage cube! I keep suggesting things but he's very minimalist.

He also says 'I'll buy what I need when I'm there' and 'They do have shops outside London you know'.

Fair enough - job done!

This is the best approach!

dressupinyou · 29/08/2022 09:19

If they're allowed and there's space, a min

dressupinyou · 29/08/2022 09:20

A mini fridge for their room if allowed and there's space. I kept my booze in mine and cold drinks which were always getting pinched out of the flat fridge.

Wordlewobble · 29/08/2022 22:33

I doubt many halls would allow this unless it was to keep medication in that required refrigeration and in this instance I think this is likely to be provided by the University.

Love this thread.. DS the last of my brood off in Sept. I'm a seasoned at this but just as excited for the prep as always.. DS will not be as 'on board' as DDs .. 'won't need much'.. until he gets there and numerous hails of help.. need this/ that! .. for tmz!.. 🙄so I'm keen to pre-empt/ get organised. Joining the shopping party late as didn't want to tempt fate and shop before results in! (I have a s/s used each time but already adding to it from great suggestions here!) I don't agree this is nanny culture, it's an exciting prep time whether you buy new or reuse old. DS is doing the most important independent stuff .. setting up student bank a/c online, student finance, .... checking the best SU social discount card 😆

visited a zero waste, eco-friendly refill shop and made up some spice blends/mix/rubs.

spice blend 1: cumin, coriander, paprika, chilli powder, black pepper, garlic powder, ground ginger, nutmeg, garam masala and ground turmeric.

spice blend 2: sugar, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, coriander, salt, dried oregano, dried parsley, ground ginger, ground cardamon, smoked paprika and cayenne pepper.

idea being to marinate proteins & cook.

@MarchingFrogs : The stove-top and microwave toasted sandwich makers are genius. Thank you

Toastie bags are handy too..

aesopstables · 30/08/2022 19:59

Yep I’ve made up a few spice blends

one for traybakes
one for meat/veg on the George Foreman
garam masala for curry
a taco/fajita one l

also got him a thingy you attach to the loo that lights up different colours - motion sensor. That’s his fave 😂

Lovemusic33 · 30/08/2022 20:49

I think we have everything now (waiting for a dunelm order), she’s waiting to see what others have before buying an air fryer as it would be silly to have 5 of them in one kitchen, she has a microwave toasty maker. Home bargains have the extension leads with USB ports for £6.99 (or around that price). I have bought her pizza scissors because she has dyspraxia and struggle with a pizza cutter. I’m unsure if she needs a rug for her room? I guess it makes it more homely and less prison cell like 🤔

CinnamonJellyBeans · 30/08/2022 21:18

@Lovemusic33 Have you tested out the sandwich maker yet? I'm also waiting on a Dunhelm order. i was hoping they might have some of the items in a bank holiday sale and waited in vain.

NCTDN · 30/08/2022 21:34

We've had a successful shop with dunelm and the range. Home bargains bags are great!!

Lovemusic33 · 30/08/2022 21:59

I haven’t tried to toasty maker but it has good reviews on Amazon, I bought it during prime day.

SkygardenTower · 31/08/2022 19:43

Denelm do a student discount with either unidays or confirmation email. IKEA you need unidays.

There was a lot in doing pre uni shops.

We have pretty much everything now, just a couple of bits qmd bobs from Amazon to go.

Airers in their bedrooms usually. They do make everywhere very damp though.

PhotoDad · 18/11/2023 15:24

Zombie thread! But if anyone is reading... following from the last post, a small low-energy dehumidifier. DD's room got way too damp, and now she is taking laundry to the laundrette to dry.

mumsneedwine · 18/11/2023 16:22

The Lakeland heated dryer is fantastic. Especially with the cover. V v cheap to run too.

Is there one that you'd recommend?

We got a "Teliser" which runs on 40W and seems to collect a decent amount of water, and also a chemical dehumidifier ("Aero 360") for the bathroom. But there are lots of other ones out there which all seem about the same so I'd probably just go for anything you can find on special offer!
