My Ds has been offered his back up option of UWE to start in 2023 for media and communications which he is happy about . And I’m looking for any advice from people that either know of or have been there. We live in london and one of his criteria was to be in a city but I don’t know Bristol well I know it’s not central but transport seems good . The uni seems well regarded as a non RG and course seems good any thoughts welcome

There's good buses to the centre of Bristol but no, it's not walkable

Lots of DS2's mates seem to be at UWE - think it is well regarded for a less-popular/non RG uni.

It's a long way out of town for sure but DS reckons all his mates live in Bristol and go to uni once or twice a week. Seems legit.

Lot of sport there if he is sporty at all - it's a great place for America football if that might be his thing!

I was a student at Bristol back in the day and it is a lovely city (tho the uni was very posh and full of rich white yah boys; but I imagine UWE is not).

UWE is a decent university and the city is lively so the whole student experience is likely to be a good one.

But the media and comms course there isn't particularly highly regarded and in my experience is unlikely to get you into a media role after graduation. Does your DS have a plan/know what he'd like to do post-university?

Notearspleasetoday · 20/08/2022 14:29

@thing47 i dint think he knows
he has history psychology and politics at BBC and getting the C remarked and this was his back up option after Liverpool which needed ABB. he wants to be in a city !

I totally get that, DD2 was the same (city). In that case, I'd say he'll have a great time at UWE and should go for it.

Just as long as he doesn't have the expectation that the course will take him straight into a job in the media world.

@thing47 seems no degree takes you in to a job these days in any field - or so it seems ! I'll take him there to have a look

I’m currently studying at UWE, but as a mature student, degree apprentice in a healthcare profession, so entirely different circumstances.

as far as the teaching, support etc goes they’ve been great and I would definitely recommend them. obviously completely different subject, but hoping their ethos carries through all subjects. I know lots of people, colleagues, friends and family who have studied there, no one I know has had a bad experience.

they campus is a long was from the city centre, but some of the accommodation is more central and public transport is good, including voi electric scooters. Bristol is s a great city with a really good feel and lots going on. I’m sure your ds will be very happy there.

The young people I know who’ve been to UWE lived on campus in first year and used excellent buses.
after that they lived off the Gloucester Road and enjoyed party/bars/music central and loved the vibe in Bristol

Lemonlemon88 · 23/08/2022 10:46

What does he want to do after his degree?

Mondayagainohno · 23/08/2022 13:46

Something in media but not sure what!

TizerorFizz · 23/08/2022 18:53

What is at Salford Uni? That’s near Media City. Lots of media folk didn’t study Media. Doing a post grad is better in my view.

UWE is not in the centre of Bristol.

Lemonlemon88 · 23/08/2022 20:51

If he wants to be a journalist, i would do a degree in a subject like his a level choices then a post grad diploma. If he is thinking of going into comms and marketing then the course should be okay depending on the content (i dont know the course, i just work in comms and for what its worth i have an english degree with a post grad diploma in media and commumication).

And if he can, internships in the holidays will really help!
