Scottish system and funding

Dd y12 studying maths, fm, bio and chem but really does not have a definite idea what she wants to do at uni, but would really like to go into research eventually.Neuroscuence is her passion, but i think a broader degree would be better.she is forecast 3-4 A* s so probably could get in anywhere except oxbridge which she doesn't want to apply for.
She is keen on a scottish uni ,Edinburgh or St Andrews perhaps, because you choose 2 or 3 subjects to begin with so don't have to put all your eggs in one ba sket. The flip side of this is that it takes 4 years fir a bachelor's degree, and she really wants to do an integrated masters, but as I understand it , for an English resident only 4 years funding is available.
Bath has a natural sciences degree so that might be the route to ho down to keep options open longer.
Any ideas?

If she's doing a science/maths degree she should be able to do direct entry to second year with good A-levels, its quite common for English students (and you still get to do all the Freshers activities).

She will miss out on one year of the broader curriculum though. I think you should double check the number of year s funded though, i know in Scotland you can have five years Undergrad funded in case you change subjects or need to repeat a year.

Lancaster do 3 subjects in the first year, or at least they did when my DS started there in 2016. He was studying Philosophy, with Eng Lit and history as his minors.
In the end he transferred to Leeds to study Eng Lit for the second year on (various reasons but not the course) but it was very useful that he had studied it as well as Philosophy. So maybe that's somewhere to consider?

UG funding is usually ordinary duration of a course plus one year but double check. But I would be careful about choosing more than one Scottish Uni if living in England due to the cap on numbers of places for English students. Also places are still very competitive due to deferrals from previous years. Durham also does a Nat Science Course if of interest.

If considering a Scottish university perhaps look at others apart from St Andrews and Edinburgh. Glasgow an Strathclyde for example.

Is there a cap on places for English students? The cap is usually on Scottish students as there are a limited amount of funded places. As rUK and overseas pay more I don't think there are specific caps other than normal limits on places. You would need to ask the relevant loans
company about funding.

The reply by the SFE rep indicates that all years of an integrated masters degree are funded (and in this case, the total length of the degree would be 5 years), so funding shoukd be available for all years of a degree at a Scottish university, if the normal length of that degree is more than three years. The general formula for undergraduate funding for a resident of England is 'length of current course, plus one year, minus any years of previous study' (the latter where the applicant has previously started a degree course, but not completed it).

Wbeezer · 18/07/2022 22:53

@BinBandit there is a cap on on English students now, it's fairly recent, 2021 I think.

pinklavenders · 20/07/2022 08:30

I thought there's a cap on the free Scottish (and until 2020 EU) places? These places are the most competitive.

English students have it a little easier to get a place in comparison.

And international students have it easiest.
