Anyone know anything about the University of Amsterdam

DD has fallen in love with Amsterdam (as a city rather than the uni specifically) and
so is thinking about studying here. I don’t know anything about it except that it’s v international and courses are in English. Just wondered if anyone had any experience? Thank you.

Most of the University of Amsterdam's undergraduate courses are delivered in Dutch rather than English. Its postgraduate and taught master's degrees are offered in English.

It is possible to do a Liberal Arts and Science degree in English at Amsterdam University College, a constituent college of the University of Amsterdam. It comes highly recommended. Unfortunately, fees for UK students are now around £10,000 per annum where previously UK students paid EU/EEA fees just over £3,000 per annum.

There are about 15-20 undergraduate courses taught in English at UVA so depends where his interests lie. It may make more sense to do a masters as there are many more to choose from then.

And indeed since brexit, fees for UK students have quadrupled, I believe it is just under 10,000 euros vs 2200 for EU students...

Housing isn't easy either although the international student committee does have some rooms 'reserved' for international students for their 1st year. There is always more demand than supply though...

I studied at Leiden with Erasmus. It’s a lovely university city very close to Amsterdam by train. Might be worth looking at? My course was taught in English (English Literature 😂)

Just to add to what MimieD wrote, finding student accommodation is challenging in Amsterdam. However, students enrolled in Amsterdam University College have guaranteed accommodation for the duration of their course.

A degree is quite a commitment to a city. What about a year out?

Two of DDs friends (both American) doing year abroad there next academic year. IR type courses in English plus language classes on side. Must be okay because one has academic parents who told him they weren't paying if the course wasn't up to scratch.

DD’s friend is there, EU passport but parents live in Middle East. She loves the Uni and the city but had to learn Dutch, even though English is widely spoken there, to be able to get a job in her second year and couldn’t get accommodation so had to stay in the Uni halls. Apparently rents are very expensive and almost nothing available on the rental market.

It is probably well worth the effort to move to Amsterdam for university if your DD is interesting in working in investment banking or finance after graduation, Amsterdam now offers better opportunities than London.
