Can a uni student stay at home while parents are on benefits

My daughter has applied to Manchester met for September but is having second thoughts about moving there. She has just passed her driving test and was gifted a car by her grandad. She has applied for maintenance loan which she would receive the full amount because I am on benefits. Would she be able to stay home and travel to uni about 30 minutes each way. Would it affect my benefits her having money.

Any advice

Sal

You need to make sure depending on the benefit you get.
My niece did similar a few years ago and it didn't change her Mums ESA but her HB was reduced.

If she lives at home and commutes she will get a slightly lower maintenance loan than if she was to live at uni. She'd need to tell the loans company about the change.

Yes -they can stay at home.
Yes -they will get less maintenance loan if they stay at home (and should inform the loans company that their plans have changed)
Yes -it may affect your benefits as you will now have a non dependant person living in your home ( this is what they will be classed as).
It depends on the benefits you are on as to how they are affected

it might be a good idea to run your situation and this new scenario through a benefit check-

Full time students are not considered to be non dependants for housing benefit unless they work during the summer holiday.

Adults under 21 are not considered non dependants for UC.

That’s great @WelfareRights ... What about council tax reduction?

Council tax reduction rules differ from council to council but usually mirror the housing costs benefit you are on.

Fab.. good to know.. I guessed as much as the only links I could find about it were to specific local authorities

She wants to work during summer holidays and when ever she can really. She works at McDonald's and is on £9.50 a hour so if she worked 40 hours she would have to pay full rent which is £98 a week and then keeping her car running.

Thanks

I would get her to run through her budgeting.

Running a car - fuel, insurance, repairs, car parking charges at uni
Rent and food to you
books and other uni costs
nights outs, gigs, clothes
