Lancaster uni accommodation - top tips

Hi, any top tips for picking accommodation at Lancaster Uni (in terms of which halls and what type) please for DS studying Physics?
Lancaster is his insurance choice. He says he wants to cook for himself (but will have to up his game or starve). Also how much kitchen/bedroom things do most students actually need please? I am on a facebook group W something something and it sounds like some students have two and three large car loads of belongs and are taking everything but the kitchen sink and surely that isn’t necessary? DH will have a fit as he remembers going off to uni with one small rucksack….with very little in.
Thanks

Yes, @RampantIvy he talks about all he will need is a couple of pairs of jeans, a couple of black T shirts and a few pairs of underpants and socks and he’s sorted. He should be able to fit everything into a small rucksack and he can go on the train on his own. None of this mamby pamby dropping them off in cars.

My DS has put Lancaster as his firm. He put county superior standard and grizedale townhouse for his accommodation choices. Just got to get the grades now!

If those parents who have had DC in the super long beds could please let me know where they found suitably sized bedding I’d be grateful, thank you! A super long bed is difficult to buy for but hopefully a comfort for 6’5 DS! 😂

I imagine they are meaning Ikea but not 100% sure. But yes DS similar height so will also need a long bed.

For DS's townhouse bed, we got these:

mattress protector
and a 210cm foam mattress topper from, I think, an Ebay shop.

It's always advisable to get a foam mattress topper of some sort, because inevitably the mattress that your DC gets might not be new, and may be... ahem... not entirely pristine.

At the time that DS was moving into a Lancaster townhouse, we couldn't find any fitted single sheets of that length, so we just got unfitted double or kingsize, and made them fit as best we could. That also meant that we weren't laying out any more money than was absolutely necessary, on bedding that he was going to be using for only a year. We have found that most privately rented student accommodation has rooms set up with double beds.

Thank you both!

Is anyone else's DC looking at pendle?

I found out where you get 210cm beds : the Netherlands! Just need a trip there to buy bedding

The townhouses at County or Grizedale are good. County is the biggest college but at the north end of campus whereas Grizedale is a bit more central

DD applied for Lonsdale ensuite show flat and Bowland en suite

DS has just finished his first year at Lancaster and is in Fylde college. He was in Superior Ensuite accommodation. 8 of them in his flat and they're all living together again next year so it worked out really well. He has a friend doing Physics who put County and Furness down as his choices as they were closest to the Physics building. He ended up in Furness and their accommodation is right next to Fylde.

To be honest I don't think it really matters which college you pick, although DS assures me Fylde has the best bar - but I think that's just because its the Sports Bar so they show a load of sport on the TV!

There's this useful Maze Map on their website which allows you to easily see where everything is in relation to everything else. It's all pretty close.

use.mazemap.com/#v=1&config=lancaster&center=-2.780372,54.008809&zoom=14.7&zlevel=1&campusid=341

We had one car load of stuff. Just a couple of other things DS found really useful in addition to the things already mentioned:

  • Overdoor hooks to go on the bathroom door. He had two sets that we hung so he had hooks on either side of the door. Really useful for towels and hoodies/coats etc.
  • Hanging storage thing for the bathroom - hung up on the shower controller to hold shampoo/shower gel etc

Can anyone advise if the hobs in the campus accommodation are electric or induction? I have a vague memory visiting a uni and noting induction and think it might be Lancaster?

choirmumoftwo · 03/08/2022 20:33

@beenrumbled hobs in County townhouses definitely weren't induction. I know this because DD had copper bottomed saucepans which don't work on induction hobs.

@choirmumoftwo thank you
