Looking for any experience or any insight as we seek to decide between these two offers.
I’m conscious these are two potentially very different university experiences and we are split down the middle. Thanks so much

I got aright old pasting for using that expression on another thread. It is commonly used at DD's university BTW.

TizerorFizz · 04/06/2022 14:22

Commonly used doesn’t make using it acceptable. If just means DCs have class issues and are tribal. We could all think of words to describe poor people on benefits. I don’t use them because I have respect. Applies thd other way around in my book.Just be pleasant.

HyrdoElectric · 04/06/2022 14:47

Although last time I looked no one user gets to decide what is acceptable.... however much they believe they have all the answers.

CornishGem1975 · 04/06/2022 14:53

I've never know "rah" to be taken as an offensive slur Grin

But It’s not a protected characteristic or even offensive!.
Identifying groups of poor people (usually with the aim of pointing out what they doing wrong) is not the same as a pointing out a privileged group who are generally having a lovely time.

Anyway I agree about being tribal. About time we stopped using Tory and Brexiteer as shorthand for knob.

TizerorFizz · 04/06/2022 16:20

It’s pointing out that you think they are white privileged students. Protected is nothing to do with it. Being divisive and pointing fingers is what it’s really about.

TizerorFizz · 04/06/2022 16:22

@lightisnotwhite
I can see where your DC get it from.

My poor DS?!
He’s going to Warwick. Probably the most diverse of the non London RG Uni’s. Exeter, Durham, St Andrews, Bath are a sea of white, privately educated youngsters.

Whatever. I watch Made in Chelsea. I know a Rah when I see one.😁

CornishGem1975 · 04/06/2022 18:56

Indeed @lightisnotwhite The whole area is very diverse.

NotYourOscarSpeech · 04/06/2022 19:14

I was an UG at KCL 10 years ago, studying law.

One thing to bear in mind is - if likely to be an issue - the cost of London. For context, I got the minimum student maintenance loan and it didn’t even cover my halls fees, never mind anything else.

I wouldn’t say it was any more “rah” than other Russell Group unis (although my sister went to Durham and that was almost a parody when I visited..), the real wealth I saw came mainly from international - especially Asian - students, whose parents had bought them properties in central London, would slope off to Bond St between lectures etc.

mamalovesbaby777 · 06/06/2022 23:42

Wow thanks so much. Been so interesting to read. We are still undecided but Thursday is the deadline so a little more time to wrestle with this haha 😭🥴🙉

I recommend go and visit, do the open days. Warwick was the only full open day we could attend and it was at the bottom of DS’s list but the one he liked the most. He ended up firming it over St Andrews. As others have said look at graduate opportunities, internships, DS firmed Warwick for MORSe (maths & stats based course) as it had good links with banks and good graduate opportunities. We visited St A but wasn’t allowed inside but I think he just liked the campus feel of Warwick and it’s close to home. We live in the suburbs of london anyway so DS can do all the london stuff in the holidays so should be happy at Warwick.

hockeygrass · 08/06/2022 19:49

@Darbs76 , the OP's ds has to decide by tomorrow, it's for 2022 entry.

Darbs76 · 08/06/2022 20:32

Ah thanks, I thought this was for next year. Hopefully visits have been done then

BungleandGeorge · 08/06/2022 20:51

i believe all unis have been told that all teaching must revert to in person as usual from September so all the covid isolation etc is probably largely irrelevant now. Those two are poles apart in terms of lifestyle etc, doesn’t your son have an idea which would suit him? I’ll be honest I chose my uni totally independently of my parents to suit myself so I’m surprised that he can’t choose between 2 such different places

mamalovesbaby777 · 09/06/2022 20:10

@BungleandGeorge you are surprised he can’t chose between them 😂 How patronising. I’m just doing a little research as a mother because I care about what are two incredibly different choices and I was after some insider parental experience. Of course he is aware they are different, and indeed both have pros and cons.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to share, I really do appreciate it.
