Ongoing A level exams: are your DC finding them hard?

Ugh. DS appeared well prepared for the exams and has been working non-stop, but so far Economics ( his pet subject), Further Maths and Physics have all been very hard, apparently. Did anyone else's DC find them hard? ( misery loves company and all that). I hope the grade boundaries aren't too high.
He has a conditional offer from UCL.

Same with my DS. He is on AQA and I think he said it was on waves

Yes that's the one!

BriocheForBreakfast · 01/06/2022 19:27

DD heard from friends that FM followed the advance info more closely (Edexcel) and she's hoping that will be the same for maths. That's her next exam.

GU24Mum · 02/06/2022 16:08

@angieloumc Snap! Mine is doing exactly the same A levels. Uni choice in doubt after the "how late is too late to change degree course?" question though..... I've said not to think about it til exams are over!

That's teenagers for you isn't it?
My DD was going to study Anthropology, she'd wanted to since year 9, but on starting A level RE she discovered Philosophy was her calling.
What is your DC wanting to change to abs from?

Back into it again after the half term...DS upset again after another hard economics exam. He is working himself up saying he is stupid and should have extra time 😟. I have said if the worst comes to the worst, he can resit (he has a gap year) but too just wait and see.

I feel like a bad parent as I feel there may be slight learning difficulties and I suspected this when he was younger. Was assessed for dyslexia but was borderline although were told he had slight processing delay. We left it until he went to senior school and I wanted to have him assessed again but he refused and was really upset saying "you think I'm stupid". Against my better judgement I left it.

Now I really wish we'd had a proper full assessment. Could I have this done after the exams in case he needs to resit?

My DS found todays economics paper hard as well. One section he said had a weird question :-)

blue421 · 06/06/2022 19:35

My son sat economics today too. He seemed to think it wasn't too bad, other than a slightly obscure 5 marker. But time pressured.

Should have mentioned Edexcel board

mubarak86 · 07/06/2022 05:22

I don't get the "if everyone found it hard grade boundaries will be lower". Does that mean if scores are lower the GB will be lowered?

blue421 · 07/06/2022 06:10

Yes. The grade boundaries are a moveable feast.

GU24Mum · 07/06/2022 15:30

@angieloumc - trying not to give it too much thought at the moment but possibly from English to Psychology. I guess better now than later!!

Yes it's definitely better now.
My DS who's now 24 started his first year at Lancaster studying philosophy. At Lancaster they also do two minor subjects, his were English lit and History. He liked the course but was very unhappy there, so at the end of the first year he transferred to Leeds and English lit. Fortunately it worked out and he's now doing his PhD.

So while I was a little perturbed at DD changing her mind from Anthropology to Philosophy, it's what is best for her. I hope your DS makes the best decision for him too.

angieloumc · 07/06/2022 17:12

On another note DD sat her first Eng Lit exam today, she said it was difficult but she thought it went well. Six to go!

GU24Mum · 07/06/2022 17:34

I got a more downbeat report from English today but hopefully it will all be OK - in whatever form "OK"ends up taking!

heavyistheheed · 07/06/2022 17:42

DS had WJEC maths today and said it was a nightmare. Confused

KittenKong · 07/06/2022 17:45

We had Maths today too. So far most of the papers have been ‘hard but ok’.

CaliforniaDrumming · 07/06/2022 17:47

Yesterday's Economics and today's Math were apparently "okay". But probably no use to anyone here as DS does the OCR board, which seems rare. He has an exam daily this week. I am just providing a steady stream of food ( and some junk).

Volterra · 07/06/2022 17:49

DS also had OCR maths today and said it was ok but most of the other boards seem to have had awful papers.

Sallyingon · 07/06/2022 18:31

My DS had edexcel maths. He keeps telling me about questions he got wrong!

scabby1 · 07/06/2022 18:37

Oh no, Ds had OCR maths today and thought it went okish, but that it was a very hard paper…….

KittenKong · 07/06/2022 18:44

DS had Edexcel maths and English today. He was muttering about people writing reams and reams in English.

CaliforniaDrumming · 07/06/2022 18:51

Further maths tomorrow! Absolute hell.
The tube strike in London didn't help either, but luckily we had planned ahead and DS went to school by Uber boat! ( car free family). I can imagine that it might have taken some by surprise though.

Drove DS in - bloody strike.

Lovemusic33 · 07/06/2022 19:15

Dd sat English lit and Maths today, she said the English lit was easy (just one quote that she forgot but not a biggy), she said Maths was really hard and there were a couple she didn’t answer including the last question. She’s predicted A/A* for English and a B for a maths but her mocks have been B/C for maths.

DD has 5 uni offers but has secured a place at a uni that only wants B,B,C and has turned down 2 Russell group uni’s so there’s less pressure to get all A’s 😬. She seemed pretty relaxed this morning, unlike me.

Lovemusic33 · 07/06/2022 19:17

DD’s Maths was Edexel.
