French/Spanish cities that are nice places to do a language course over summer

DD is in her first year at university studying French and Spanish. Over the summer vacation she would like to spend some time doing a language course in France and/or Spain. Does anyone have any recommendations for cities? Key criteria:

  • somewhere where a lone female student will feel safe (-obviously I appreciate no city is crime free, but some places feel safer than others);
  • somewhere that is a pleasant place to be with plenty of places of interest to explore locally that are reachable on foot or by public transport.

Interested in any recommendations. NB Interested in recommendations for cities even if you don't know whether there's a suitable language course there, as DD may spend some time just travelling.

TIA

Sorry OP, you could have given a bit more info in OP, save people doubling up info...
I thought I'd given quite a bit of info! Having spoken to DD since starting this thread, she has not ruled out going back to Salamanca, so if anyone has any specific Salamanca language schools you recommend, suggestions are welcome. She has been to Paris a few times, but I certainly don't think she's ruled out ever going back there. She's been on a short trip to Madrid (not involving a language course). She has been on family beach holidays to Menorca and spent a few hours in Nancy as a young child. Never visited any of the other places suggested on this thread!

@Japanopen
Unless she’s desperately keen to go to Latin America for y3, I would avoid Madrid in the summer because she can go in her year abroad. If she goes to Spain of course. I really would look at a seaside area with a neutral accent.

I remember my DDs Italian teacher at school saying DD wasn’t to pick up a Rome accent when we visited there. They have certain shortened words that are not used elsewhere apparently. DD did actually notice that!

Nice is quite a good shout for France. Enough to see and do. What about anywhere in Brittany? Or Bordeaux? Not sure about accents though! DD did part of her year abroad in Geneva. French speaking and a lake!

I also did a Spanish language course in Costa Rica many years ago and it was brilliant fun. Stayed with a host family. Made lots of friends from Europe and the US.

Can recommend the intensive courses run by the Centro por Lenguas Modernas at the university of Granada. DD had great teaching and enjoyed the city which is lovely and super safe.

Pau is a lovely city in the Aquitaine region (south west France). Great student feel and set between the mountains and ocean.
