Maintenance loan less than expected

DD has accepted a place at a London University this September. She's applied for student finance, DH and I completed our bits also, and this morning she got a letter saying she'll receive just over £6k.

When I used the loan calculator on the .gov.uk website, it came out with a figure exceeding £8k.

Our taxable income is around £55k between us, DD has no taxable income.
We will struggle to make up the shortfall (means testing doesn't take into consideration your other financial obligations!) but we'll do our best.
She will be eligible for £5k NHS bursary and plans to work around placements.

We will obviously query it (although getting DD to call will be an uphill struggle) but does anyone know if the bursary affects how much loan they can receive?

London is a very expensive place to train/ be a student to be honest, I'd be looking at someone nearer home that didn't incur huge amounts of rent/bills
If you get a bursary it means you get less as a student loan as it's all
Counted in.

I think getting a bursery means a lower loan. Parents are supposed to top up to full loan.

I don’t think the bursary should affect it. I thought the NHS were offering bursaries to encourage people to train.
My DS had a letter saying he was getting less than expected for this year too. He rang them and they changed it to the full amount. They didn’t give a reason, just said how the letter he received a couple of days before must have been out of date!

I think (but am not sure) that NHS bursaries are non- repayable, ie, free, so therefore your dd will receive less maintenance loan, which is repayable.
Check on the Save the Student website to start with.

My bursary didn't affect my loan amount.

Bursaries don’t effect the amount of loan you get, they’re additional.

has the filled the application in right, stating she’ll be in London and living away from home?

did you use the right tax year when you did the calculator?

She's told them which university, and that she won't be living at home. We definitely used the right tax year. However, there was an issue with my daughter's tax code where she ended up paying emergency tax (she effectively has two part time jobs but the second job is only in the holidays and she definitely doesn't earn enough to pay tax) so we suspect that this may have caused the issue!
