Maintenance loan and living at home

Hi
DD 18 is applying for foundation degree and doing this at local college. Travel will be around 500 a year and we know she'll need a computer- it's media production. How much maintenance loan should she take, we won't take rent off her and will ensure she's clothed and fed. ? Thanks

She could just apply for the tuition fee loan and the non-means-tested basic maintenance loan? That would give her some spare money for doing stuff other than buying a new laptop and going backwards and forwards to her classes, and she can always tuck anything she finds she doesn't really need away in a savings account.

So I took full loan because I got a grant. Lived at home for 5 years. Now i'm 65,000+ in debt and the bastards keep adding interest 😊

I would say as little as possible or consider none and a part time job?

Best of luck to them 😃

Ds(18) will be starting uni this year and will be commuting. For first year he has applied for his tuition fees only, no loan. He will have no travel costs for uni. He is planning to work as many hours as he can get PT now (last exam next week) until September and saving as much as possible and, if possible, will work PT at weekends once uni starts. We will let him live rent free, feed him at home and keep giving him his allowance which is £150/month and review as the year progresses. If he needs a new laptop (engineering) we have said we will get as an early Christmas present, but he thinks the 2 year old one he has will be OK.

We are in Scotland so you would need to check if same is allowed in England. We asked student loans Scotland and they said if he decides later in the year he needs a loan he can still apply as many times as he wants for all or part of the loan amount he is entitled too. If he takes out a loan we will review his allowance.

If he decides to live out 2nd year we will need to review how to afford it.
