Manchester, Newcastle or Sheffield for quiet non party-er?

Anyone with a quiet introvert at any of Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle?

Dc, who has asd, will apply in the winter. Likes these best for the course, though a bit worried about the rest of student life in a big “party” city.

Thought would prefer a campus but has rejected a few campus unis because course looks “rubbish”.
Chosen course is not offered that widely anyway.

Newcastle was favourite, but dc was put off by the phrase “work hard, play hard” about the student accommodation village and thinks it just means everyone will be noisy and partying all the time.

Sheffield doesn’t offer catered accommodation, which is a big negative, though does have “quiet accommodation” which is a big positive.

Manchester is the biggest city and uni, so quite overwhelming.

Don’t know about Leeds.

Anyone have any insights?

I only know Manchester, but wouldn't let the fact that it's the biggest put your DS off. As it's a big, diverse place, it can in many ways be easier to find like minded people. There are lots of societies devoted to quieter pursuits. The International Society in particular offers loads of day trips, as well as booze free events like book clubs and games nights - you don't need to be an international student to join.

There's a rich cultural life in Manchester with plenty of art exhibitions and classical concerts if that floats your DS's boat. "Lifestyle moderated" halls are available which offer a quieter environment.

I have a quiet (well, social introvert) there too. I also think that sometimes large numbers can be good as they can find similar friends.

Thank you, we’ve had a couple of trips to Leeds and Manchester to take a proper look at the cities and student areas.

DC has decided Manchester is not the right place but was surprised to really like Leeds a lot, which none of us were expecting, got a really good feel from the campus area and the main shopping part.

Open day booked for Sheffield in a couple of weeks, and planning for a visit to Newcastle, fingers crossed that’s a success too, and we end up with three realistic options!

Nice update OP. It’s weird isn’t it, that ‘feel’ of a place. Something just clicks. Once Dd had seen the course she liked and city in Newcastle, I was very glad she got in as she didn’t feel the same for the other 4 we visited. She only put 2 down on her UCAS form - luckily they both gave her offers but she had ‘fallen’ for Newcastle.

Definitely a feel.

one of my DC was trying to choose between Liverpool and Sheffield but really clicked with Sheffield. They got the Liverpool offer first and we spent weeks being upbeat and positive about Liverpool before finally melting with relief when the Sheffield offer arrived.

In our house “Doing a Liverpool” now means making something work that isn’t your first choice but is still great.

I know loads of young people that would much prefer Liverpool's buzzy vibe than Sheffield’s laid back, outdoorsy one so I’m not trying to run either great place down.

Sheffield laid back and outdoorsy???? It really isn’t for most students. A tiny minority make it into the countryside. Laid back adults in the city but the uni is known to be fun central. That’s why students choose it and like it.

This doesn't represent my experience at all. My Sheffield uni friends tended to spend most weekends, and evenings in the summer, either mtbing or climbing in the Peak. I think we only ever set foot in West Street pubs about twice. Depends who your friends are though, I guess.

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 05/06/2022 21:21

It’s obviously all things… And what you make it. Hiking club combines weekend walks with weekday evening meet up in pub.
Most big universities should have opportunities to fund people.

Find!

Funnily enough @ZandathePanda DD felt the same about Newcastle. She only applied to three universities post A levels and really only wanted Newcastle. She has two more exams then she will have finished.

TizerorFizz · 05/06/2022 22:51

@trailrunner85
I would guess by your name it doesn’t. I’ve not seen thousands of Sheffield students heading for the Peak District for trail running.ever. I’ve been around Sheffield a lot. A few yes. The vast majority, no. You like a niche sport. Most students don’t head out every weekend. Obviously people make friends with like minded folk. Most universities have all sorts but the vast majority are not hitting the trails. Far more hit the bars. Ditto in Newcastle.

My introvert is going to Man Met. They have quiet halls and studios, and blocks with 4 students per flat as well as the noisy house of ten rooms etc, so we are hopeful he will do well. The course he is on by its nature will be attracting some other introverts so we are hopeful he'll find a niche.
