My son wants to change universities halfway through the course

My DS is studying nursing in York and having attended through Covid hasn't had the best experience or been particularly well supported by his tutors he is also marginally autistic but undiagnosed. DS has now decided he would like to move to a new university closer to home (he has struggled quite a lot with his mental health). Given that he only has one more year left of study I've no idea how to help or support him in changing unis. Can anyone offer and advice or experience please?

It’s entirely possible. Does he know which one he wants to go to? He essentially needs to talk to the new one and the original one and get them to map the learning outcomes / placement hours and credits across to check that it will work.

I don't know. Nursing degrees are hard work at the best of time, but with covid in the mix its been hard for them. My dd qualified last year. She missed out on loads of peer support, doing placements on wards which where and probably still are under imense pressure. Well done him. I trained a while back and I don't remeber anyone transferring from different universities. People deferred a year or two.

One year to go the end is nearly in sight

Ds is also 2nd year nursing (not York though). Is there no possibility of staying at York and getting better support, I would start there with his academic advisor/tutor etc? Otherwise if he is set on changing he needs to speak to the new university asap. One thing which he will need to be careful about is to make sure he doesn't lose out on practical hours if he manages to change. Not all unis run their nursing courses in the same way but he will need to have 2,300 hours (I think that's the number) to qualify and he may end up with an awful lot of hours to make up in his final year.

Thank you for your reply. He has approached his tutor but they are new in post, it seems lots of staff are choosing to leave York, and aren't really any help.
I believe he is hoping to go to one of the Welsh unis. I know he is willing to resit the second year, if necessary.

He has approached his tutor

But his current tutor isn't likely to be real help, other than perhaps writing him a reference, as they're at the university your DS wants to leave. Your DS needs to start making enquiries at the universities he wants to move to.
